G2G: Does anyone know the German translation for Preußen? [closed]

Question

I seem to have Invalid characters in Birth Location. Invalid characters in Death Location.

This is the culprit in question: Königsberg/Preußen, Preußen

Does anyone know the German translation for Preußen?

Beth, that character that looks very much like the Greek letter for beta, which I believe is exclusive to the German language, is the equivalent of a double-s, so you can read it as "ss" every time you see it.

While you can use ß here, WikiTree does not accept symbols like "/" in location fields - that was the culprit.

Prussia is it and if you have no "ß" take "ss".

I always use Preußen in the location field of the data section, where I use the correct language for the time/place, but I use Prussia in the biography, which is written in English.

What record did you get this location information from? Is it linked back to a particular parish register or civil act register?

edit: I see this came from Ancestry for Amalie Hölzner. The cover of the book says it is from the city of Königsberg, the one that was part of East Prussia, now called Kaliningrad, Russia.

I would suggest providing a link to the record in the profile. The WikiTree Sourcer plugin will do this for you. For example:

Since the German Empire was created in 1871, you could even make the birth and death location say "Königsberg, Ostpreußen, Preußen, Deutches Kaiserreich"

The slash is used in German place names as short for 'am' (on the), for places on a river, or in this case 'in', for places in a certain region. But the slash cannot be used in Wikitree location field.

I'd change 'Königsberg/Preußen' to 'Königsberg in Preußen'.

Hi Beth, the '/' is most likely the issue. Remove that and see how it goes.
