Sometimes the circular checkboxes are clear, sometimes they are green and sometimes they are red. What is the difference?

They aren't checkboxes.  They show the colour of the Privacy level of the profiles (red is Private, clear is Open, Green is public etc).

The circles that you refer to Nancy indicate the Privacy Levels of the profile. For a deeper explanation look here.
