Data Doctor Challenge of the Week: Correct simple errors in reference tags (February 2023)

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This is an easy one to participate in, once you know how reference tags work, i.e.:

  1. A footnote needs to start with <ref> and end with </ref>.
  2. There needs to be a <references /> tag directly below the == Sources == headline for the footnotes to display.

Using these tags is confusing for "Newts." It's very frustrating for new members when a tag is missing or misplaced and they can't figure out why footnotes aren't appearing.

Once again, Aleš has come up with something incredibly helpful. He's prepared a report of profiles from around the tree where a reference tag appears to be misplaced.

Can you help fix them?

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Have to say "refs" etc guidance was very confusing until - I dissected one of the well-filled profiles by "pretending" to edit it whereupon all the placings of "Ref" tags and what they do became clearer - saved a pruned version as a reference note with simple note of what a particular tag does.

Some clarification in the standard WT guidance perhaps?
Is there a link to a page which tracks progress on completed corrections for this Challenge, whether by WT-ID or by all participants as a whole?
No There is no scorring for this challenge.

If you want to see your corrections, you can have a look at https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/DataDoctorsWeek/default.htm or for this week https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/DataDoctorsWeek/20230219/User.htm

I'll do some of these. It helps me stay in practice to correct the similar typos I make when adding sources to profiles.

Thanks!

This looks like a good place to be for me because this finally is making some sense (although slowly) to me.

Not sure if I qualify as a Newt though as I've been in this great space for over six years. If we're talking about understanding the tech stuff, then I guess I've been tagged.
