G2G: How to enter my own family tree?

Re: My family tree

When I started with WikiTree I uploaded a file (JEM anor t WikiTree.ged) with data on my 604 known ancestors. It contains all data I have on their birth, death, children and parents. The file has been used in GEDCOMpare, so you have it.

However, on www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mattsson-1338#Sources my family tree is empty, except for my own name and birth date.

What should I do to have my ancestors shown? I hope I don’t need to enter all text for all 604 ancestors one by one. You already have all information in the file JEM anor t WikiTree.ged.

Hi J-E,

WikiTree is unlike any other genealogy site. While you can upload a GEDCOM for processing, the information is not automatically imported in the tree.

As you noted, we use a process called GEDCOMpare. WikiTree works on the principle that there should only be one profile per person that ever lived. As you start to go further back in time, this gets tricky because more ancestors are shared by others.

The GEDCOMpare process helps to ensure that duplicate profiles are not created by suggesting potential matches for your data. Only after you review those suggestions (then match or reject the suggestion), can you then begin to add the profiles.

It is sort of a manual process to add them still at this point, but the data from your GEDCOM is used to help build the profile.

For more information, see: Help:GEDCOMpare.

Follow-up - I just had a glance and this shows at the top of your GEDCOMpare report:

There are 143 suggested matches to consider. Rejected matches: 365. Confirmed matches: 53.

You will need to finish reviewing the 143 suggested matches before the "Add" button will show up. As an alternative, the "Add" button could show up sooner in a comparison popup if the entire family unit has been reviewed.

Even if you mark an individual as "Done" using the checkmarks in the first column, this does not clear the need to review the suggested matches.

Not really an answer, but I really think it's a good idea to add a few profiles "by hand" first, at least your parents, before you start to import data from a gedcom. Doing it that way can give you a better picture of how data in the profiles work.
