Hello,

Does anyone know where I can find protestant churchbooks for Schönheide, Erzgebirgskreis, Saxony, Germany.  Specifically, I'm looking for an 1871 birth for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Weigel-934 .  At the time Schönheide would have belonged to Gerichtsamt Eibenstock or Amtshauptmannschaft Schwarzenberg.  I'm sure they're not online yet, but I may be able to travel to Germany soon and have a look at them in an archive.

I contacted the church in Schönheide and for future reference I'll answer my own question here:

The churchbooks for Schönheide are still located in situ in the church in Schönheide (beginning in 1594!).  They cannot be viewed by members of the public, but volunteers can conduct research for a fee.  Contact:

Martin-Luther-Kirche Schönheide

08304 Schönheide

Obere Str. 25a

Tel. 037755 2204

Fax 037755 2286

This is great information.

On a related subject, I found the church records for Canton Graubünden, Switzerland in Davos.  The microfisch are open to the public, no fee, back to the 1600s or 1700s.  I researched my entire family (when I was visiting there), mostly from Davos, but others from different places in Graubünden.  They were very helpful to me at the "front desk".

Later, I drove around Graubünden, and took photos in the towns and villages where my ancestors had lived.  Such a wonderful experience!

you should add "Germany" to the tags as well, then Germans who know the available church records there better than I do will see that post.

The Protestant church records in Germany are usually located in the church district archives; however, there are still quite a few parishes that archive their church records themselves. Some of these can also be found in the state church archives.
I would first write to the church and ask where the church records are kept and what possibilities there are to access them.
In Saxony, administrative church districts have also been established; here is the responsible district:

The e-mail address is on that page.

Here you have some informations about church records of digitized church books in Saxony:

Thanks Dieter, I just emailed them.  I may be able to make it there in June.
