KENYA

Get out your safari hats everybody as we are now headed to Africa and the remarkable nation of Kenya. Kenya is home not only to Africa's Big 5 game animals (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and African buffalo) but also to some of the world's most fascinating people.

Located along the eastern coast of Africa, Kenya's history dates back literally to the dawn of man. Originally a collection of city states known by the ancient Greeks and Romans as Azania, the region engaged in significant trading with the Arabs prior to making its first contact with the Western World when Portuguese explorers arrived in the 1500s. It later became a German protectorate (known as the Sultanate of Zanzibar) and then a British Colony. Independent only since 1963, the Republic of Kenya is today East Africa's largest and most important business, financial and transportation hub.

To learn more about Kenya and the 15 notables we will be meeting there, head on over to the 15 Nations: Kenya page by clicking the link here, or by stopping first at the 15 Nations Global Tour page and clicking the link in the table. Then be sure to return here to share whatever discoveries you make. Safari za furaha! ("Happy travels!" in Swahili)

For those of you who aren't on the Discord channel, we now have a Kenya Project page and sticker

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Kenya_Project

Kenya Sticker

Please see the page for the three Kenya sticker options. Please add to any notable profiles you create.

Thanks Emma. I appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Africa Project. Once the 15 Nations Global Tour wraps up in November (WikiTree Day) I plan to transfer our project over to the respective national projects, so our wins will be your wins. I look forward to working with you.

Everybody wins!heart

For those who are new to the 15 Nations Global Tour, welcome aboard. Please take a moment to introduce yourself here and be sure to keep us posted on what you're working on. We want to make sure we can all share in the joy of your successes.

Here's a few random things you should know:

1) We have a "passport" sticker available on our free space page. You can cut and paste it to your profile and modify it to reflect the country tours you've participated in,

2) If you don't know where to start researching, each of our nation pages has a link to a resources page. These are open for community editing so if you find additional resources, please be sure to add them.

3) In addition to this G2G thread, the 15 Nations Global Project does have its own channel on the WikiTree Discord server where you can chat with other tour members in real time. If you are not familiar with Discord, visit WikiTree's Discord Help Page for simple instructions on how to get set up.

4) Connecting our notables to the Global Tree is just one of our missions. If researching isn't your thing, we need people who can write bios, format sources, add categories or stickers, or even just review for typos.

5) If Kenya just isn't your cup of tea, feel free to visit our prior tour nations: India, Argentina, or Ukraine. There is still a great deal of work to do with each of these nations.

Tonight (Wednesday, 8 Mar 2023), Amy Gilpin and Azure Robinson will be hosting a WikiTree Discord Party from 6pm-8pm EST (11pm-1am GMT). This is open to all WikiTreers but it would be great to have some representation from the 15 Nations team.

Hope to see you all there!

Congratulations to Paul Gierszewski and Darren Kellett for managing to connect our first two Kenyan notables in record time. Paul connected author Joy Adamson on Day 1, while Darren connected environmentalist Daphne Sheldrick on Day 2. Great job guys!

- hi David, and thanks for the idea of the 'Tour' - -

I have two profiles for the Kenyan leg: Hugh Cholmondeley KCMG (1870-1931), and Frederick William Bell VC (1875-1954), so I hope these can help the 'history book' - - cheers

Hugh Cholmondeley KCMG (1870-1931).   -   Frederick William Bell VC (1875-1954).

Thanks John,

Kenya and all of Africa are currently highly under-represented on WikiTree, so anything you can do to help increase their presence is fantastic.

As it happens, I had recently added a Kenya section to the Unconnected profiles in Africa page, so when I saw that Kenya was stop #4, I went back and brought the list up to five unconnected branches.

The first President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, is now connected to the main tree.  (Two connections, one path through his second wife and one through his third wife.)

Congrats once again! I have also added a profile for his fourth wife and am working on several profiles for her extended family members. She has several Kenyan notables in her line.

I've added Gen. Jackson Mulinge as a profile. He was Kenya's first four star general as well as a vital part of government programs from 1986 to 1997. I would consider him to be a notable.

Are there any military categories for those who served?

In particular, the King's African Rifles (KAR),  East African Artillery and South African Air Force?
by Barbara Geisler G2G6 Mach 2 (21.4k points)

I'm not familiar with African military categories. I would suggest posting a separate G2G post asking this question specifically, and then tagging it "Africa", "Military", and "Categories" to ensure the right people see it.

Today the Kenya tour officially passed the 100 mark for new Kenyan profiles. Considering none of us had any experience with Kenyan genealogy going into this, that's not too shabby. Congratulations team!

Just a reminder, our Kenyan Wrap-Up Show will be held on YouTube, Monday, March 27 at 5pm EST (10pm GMT). I'll be presenting the final figures for Kenya and will also be making the big announcement as to where we'll be heading for Stop #5. Those who tune in live will have the opportunity to ask questions, share adventures, and participate in the general chat.

Link to the Kenya Wrap-Up

If you are unfamiliar with the 15 Nations Global Tour, be sure to tune in Monday and learn what we are all about and how you too can participate in this uniquely fascinating project.
