where did the irish winters originate?

Winter families lived in Co. Limerick Ireland in the 18th century. Frequent christian names were William, Samuel and Edward. William married Lydia Hovenden at Milford, Co. Cork in the 1790's.

There were also Winter families in east Co Limerick and in north Co Cork. I'm unable to establish any link between the east Limerick families and the others and would appreciate any assistance in this. Thank you.

Winter...may be of Irish origin deriving from the pre 10th century Gaelic Mac Giolla Gheimhridh, meaning the "son of the servant of Geimhreadh", itself a byname also meaning "Winter."  This is a partial quote taken from surnamedb.com

You can see the complete discription at the site.

Do you know whether William Winter stayed in Ireland or if he relocated to another country? If he relocated, where did he travel to?

There are a number of William Winters.

Hi Frank....yes, the William I refer to did stay in Ireland. And yes, there are a number of Williams. They're numerous actually. A lot of the family members emigrated to Australia in the early 19th century. There are records (very early) of Winters in Ballyhay, Co Cork, and also in east and west Co Limerick but I'm unable to link these.  They're not on the list of incoming Palatines, although the indications are that they arrived with them. Is it possible that they were'nt recorded? Any advice on this would be very welcome.  EdW.
