Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Jamestown Colony

March 22 marks the anniversary of the Jamestown Massacre. We're looking at Jamestown colonists in the Connection Finder next week, starting with Captain Christopher Newport, who helped establish the colony.

Here's who else we're getting started on:

Who else should we feature? We have room for eleven notables. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested.  Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us plan Connection Finder themes for 2023 here.

Not a suggestion, but just a tangential question: How do we find someone else's CC7? I only recently learned how to find my own! blush

Aleš explains how at this link.

Thanks, Jim. yes I was hoping it might be a little simpler, but that works.

Take a look through https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Jamestowne_Society_Qualifying_Ancestors Most Qualifying Ancestors have descendants in modern times. From the Jamestowne Society's website, a qualifying ancestor...

(1) was a stockholder in the London Company or the Virginia Company, or a member of one of the guilds which invested in the above, during the active investment period;

(2) owned land on Jamestown Island or lived on the Island prior to 1700 (owning land in a neighboring area or neighboring county does NOT of itself qualify an individual);

(3) was a resident in Virginia at the time of the 1624/25 Muster or earlier;

(4) served as Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Attorney General, Clerk of the General Court, Member of the Council or House of Burgesses prior to 1700; these persons shall be conclusively presumed to have had their domiciles on Jamestown Island during their terms of office;

(5) was an Anglican Church (Church of England) minister in Virginia prior to 1700; or

(6) served as an official Indian Interpreter in Virginia prior to 1700.

hmmm. Maybe not so useful. I just spot-checked a bunch of profiles, looking for ones that needed work, and they all appear to be pretty well developed.

maybe https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Jamestown%2C_Virginia_Colony & https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Jamestown_Colonists would be better places to look
Gosh, well-developed is great! We do not necessarily need profiles that need help so much as profiles that are well-developed, connected, and at least mildly interesting. :-) Honestly, this batch of suggestions have been some of the best overall looking batch of profiles I've seen in awhile. Too often the suggestions are unimproved, which makes them either unusable or something I have to work on in order to use them. The bigger reason for the suggestion thread, too, is to help narrow down some of these themes. Categories are full of great ideas, but trying to narrow to the small list we use each week is a monumental task on many occasions! Thanks, Liz!!!

Thanks in large part to the work of Shirley Dalton and Betty Norman!

The Epes/Eppes brothers were in Jamestown arriving from 1618-1622.  William on the William & Thomas in 1618, Francis and his wife, likely in 1622 on the Hopewell.  Francis served in the house of Burgesses.

Not particularly notable...but he was a land owner, Richard Longe likely came from Wiltshire in 1620  and survived both the native attacks and the ensuing illnesses.  His wife, surviving as well, was Alice Arnoll, one of the many mail order brides.

I'd love to see the Tobacco Brides included. I found the WikiTree profiles for Alice & Richard:

Thank you for looking up their IDs...I think the Tobacco Brides were a fascinating subject as well...and Alice is my ancestor, along with a number of other Jamestown denizens.
Francis Eppes is listed Eppes-17 , his brother William is Epes-160 .  They also, are ancestors.
Thanks, Linda and Liz.

William Overton [[Overton-29|William Overton (1638-aft.1697)]]  [[his wife is Elizabeth Waters  Waters-229]]

His Wikitree bio says he died in Jamestown and I'd like to see if he should be in the project or if that information is incorrect.

Yes, William is my eighth great grandfather.
Thanks, Nina.

I found that I have a connection to Jamestown on the second supply.  Thomas "Capt" Graves (01 Apr 1584-05 Jan 1634/35) m. to Kathryn Croshaw (1586-24 May 1636) (Crowshaw name needs work) are my direct ancestors.  Several days ago, while working on my husband's side, I found he is descended from Major Joseph Raleigh Croshaw (08 Nov 1610-10 Apr 1667), who also came on the second supply.  How unusual that is!  Both need work, so of couse I'd love to see that happen.

Robert Beheathland, said to be one of only two of those that first arrived in Jamestown in 1607 that survived and had children.  Has bio, but is not connected so needs work in that regard. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beheathland-1

I suggest Nicholas Martiau (Martiau-2):

Nicholas Martiau, Captain aka Martin, "Father of Yorktown," Captain of Militia, Virginia Burgess, Yorke Shire Justice, Military Engineer, Planter and Wine Maker

"In 1931, an 11-foot Vermont granite monument, with commemorative bronze plaque was erected near the site of Martiau's home and graveyard on Ballard and Buckner Streets, in the village of Yorktown. The monument was erected by the Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, in cooperation with the National (Federation of) Huguenot Societies and the Yorktown Sesquicentennial Commission"

I am very new to this, so I don't know all the jargon, but he was my maternal 10th GGF.
