Is it necessary to be a registered mormon to have an account in familysearch.org and merge trees with Wikitree!?

A church registration number is required to open an account on familysearch.org and merge eventuelly genealogic information on both wikitree and familysearch.com... I am not a mormon and don't intend to become one. Is it possible to have an account and bypass the church registration number?

All you need to do is go to the site Familysearch.org and sign up. Itʻs free and easy to use. No need to give your religious affiliation.

I’m not Mormon and I can access and use FamilySearch. I have a tree there and add records to it every so often.

The registration number is likely only required to access church member-only edits or viewing documents where non-members can only view them at a Family History Center.
