Hi Wikitreers,

I’m researching the genealogy of Mary Jerusha (Ely) Whitney (abt. 1827 - 1854) who died tragically at the very young age of 28 due to Pulmonary Consumption. She bore a daughter for George Whitney (1819 - 1885) named Mary Ely (Whitney) Outerbridge (abt. 1850 - 1881) who also tragically died at age 30 of Puerperal Fever. She also bore a son to Alexander Ewing Outerbridge Jr (1850 - 1928) a son named George Whitney Outerbridge (1881 - 1885)  who died at age 3 (how this toddler died is unknown more research needed). We know from census reports the patriarch George Whitney (1829-1885) was very well to do with many Irish servants living in Philadelphia and at time of death had a valued estate (especially his collection of art/paintings). The tragedy in this whole family is (in my humble opinion) the “end of the line” no heir beyond George Outerbrick who died (age 3).

The story continues in my research into the Ely family which the roots trace back to colonial Connecticut with an in between stop in New York State.

What to research currently is Mr. Alexander Ewing Outerbrick Jr. We would like for him to be connected and my suspicion is his father is Alexander Ewing Outerbridge (1816 - 1900). We know Jr was a “eminent physicist, metallurgist and chemist.”

It appears Alexander Ewing Outerbridge Jr never remarried and no other children were born to him. Did he remarry or have more children? Maybe he died widowed heartbroken over the loss of his young wife and toddler son?

Any collaboration is appreciated

Note: Mary Jerusha (Ely) Whitney has a beautiful photo of herself age 21 on her FindAGrave memorial

Andrew:

Alexander, Jr. has an entry at page 2375, in Who's Who in America (1923), which, in addition to other biographical information, names his parents as Alexander Ewing and Laura C. (Harvey) Outerbridge, and names his brothers Albert (apparently listed in the 1916-1917 edition) and Eugene (listed underneath his brother).

This would seem to confirm Alexander Ewing Outerbridge (1816 - 1900) is his father mother profile needs creating

I’m still trying to clarify his actual place of death the obit seems to allude to it but any idea?
