Carl L. Sweden writing on back of CDV “Vintage photo” c. 1880?

Hi Wikitreers,

I believe what I’m looking at on this CDV in my collection is a Carl L. The LNAB needs interpretation and deciphering so we can have an exact LNAB. The back of the photo is in another language. I believe is Swedish? It appears he is with his sister or wife? It is c. 1880 I believe from the style of dress etc

Any collaboration in his genealogy is appreciated

Thank you

Lundblad for sure. It is a common Swedish name. It is written in cursive handwriting. But the addition of what looks like an h on the end has me baffled. Just bad spelling?

Thank you yes I updated LNAB unless there is a more researched source a mystery couple from the pages of time

Very possible this is our couple memorial as collection is almost all when researched out of Rhode Island, NYC or Ct. SEE https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/77446342/carl-anton_theodore-lundblad the dates are exact to the group of photos obtained and sets ages appropriate but of course further research is needed.

Excellent, that sounds very promising!

Best case scenario a family member in this group has other photos to match faces to confirm but they aren’t forgotten smiley

Carl Anton Theodor was born in Stockholm Kungsholm to undisclosed parents 11 December 1867.

Birth record: Kungsholms kyrkoarkiv, Födelse- och dopböcker, SE/SSA/0011/C I/12 (1862-1875), bildid: 00026601_00151, sida 149 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/00026601_00151

He was fostered out from the Stockholm orphanage more or less immediately, with the name Carl Anton Theodor Lundblad.

In 1871 he was sent in fosterage in Liared, Älvsborg county (farther from Stockholm)

When he left for America in 1889 he was a farm hand in Norra Åsarp, also Älvsborg county.

This is definitely the person from the Find a Grave memorial, I'm not so sure it's the Carl Lundblad in the photo. Carl Anton Theodor lived nowhere near Ängelholm - and I doubt that he had a woman in his life in Sweden.
This is interesting and definitely matches the FindAGrave. I noticed the couple in the photo seem to have a resemblance the sag under eyes and the noses eye brows maybe a sister or relative not his wife in image could be wrong but intriguing. The follow up of the FindAGrave Man is helpful and what an interesting story with the orphanage!
The reason I didn't think it was a sister of Carl was that he didn't seem to have contact with his birth family. He must have gotten the surname Lundblad from somewhere, but finding him and any pertinent notes in the orphanage rolls is a lot more work than it was finding him in the ArkivDigital indexes.

Thanks for the best Answer Andrew! Looks like Eva has some great finds for you! yeslaugh

For what it's worth: I agree with Lundbladh, although Lindblad is also a common name in Sweden. The final "h" would be mute - I'd call it a vanity spelling (if there is such a term).
Adding an h to names like …blad or …lund is fairly common.  It seems some families added h to distinguish themselves for others with the same name. There’s an Asplundh tree service operating in my county.

Well at least we know it’s Swedish and this is interesting was hoping it gave a date in translation yes

No date, there is more text at the top but it looks like a standard business ad on the back of the paper sleeve for the photo.
The business ad is the name of the photographer and the town where he had his studio, Engelholm, or nowadays Ängelholm.
Oh that’s neat! So right from the country of Sweden photo wasn’t taken in USA?

The photographer was Thord Mathson in Ängelholm. The website of The Federation of Swedish Genealogical Societies has a section of photographers and old photos:

Amazing the photos from his studio absolute treasure and this couple were there during the era getting their picture taken. I wonder what years they operated?
I just browsed the pages of Thord Mathsson's photos. Most were of unknown persons; the few that were dated were from about 1909-1912, so a little later than your estimate. My impression of their appearance and dress was that it was similar to Carl L.
Oh I see maybe a turn of the century era not the late 19th as suspected.
Photographer Thord Mattsson lived in Ängelholm between 1905 and 1917. Before that in Skövde (where he was an assistant, learning the ropes) and afterwards in Helsingborg.

I don't know their names, but both the man and the woman are wearing a wedding or engagement ring in the photo so they are likely a couple. This might be an engagement photo.

Thank you I didn’t see that! The gentleman definitely has a ring band on left hand engagement fingeryes

Thank you!

These “CDV” are really a treasure trove lost in time that will help and benefit so much in genealogy
Just to be nerdy, the carte de' visite (CDV) photos were small pictures, most popular in the 1860's. They were replaced by the larger cabinet photos in the 1870's and later (meant to be displayed on a cabinet). The cabinet photos are about 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches (11x17 cm), and have space on the back for a large logo of the studio, like we see here.
