G2G: Should changing LNAB increase CC7?

I noticed today that the birth of George Clanc(h)y [[Clancy-1515]] was registered with the extra H in the surname, so I changed the LNAB and he became [[Clanchy-9]].

An unexpected side-effect is that my CC7 went up by 1, and both profiles appear in Degree 6 at

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special%3AMyConnections&w=Waldron-201

When I mouseover the link to the original profile, his parents appear as [father unknown] and [mother unknown]. They appear as expected when I mouseover the link to the new profile.

Will these quirks right themselves in the coming days?

It appears his whole family is named Clancy. A quirk in how a birth is registered does not, to me, seem like the kind of thing that should go down as his last name at birth, making it seem like he changed the spelling of the family name later in life, when in fact somebody just made a mistake on a form.

Do we really think he spent his childhood being called Clanchy while his parents and siblings were Clancys?

I interpret the LNAB field as a means of directing myself and other researchers to the official birth record.

We know from the 1901 census that George spoke Irish, so he probably spent his childhood being called Mac Fhlannchadha or some variant thereof.

My standard advice to beginning genealogists includes the following:

  • Names in Ireland were spoken and written in three languages
    • in Irish by the ordinary people;
    • in Latin by the Catholic church authorities;
    • in English by the civil authorities.
  • There were no computers insisting on consistent spelling of names before the late 20th century.
  • Different anglicisations of Irish surnames should not be singled out as "real" or "correct" or "an error" or "a mistake" or "wrong spellings".

That's a temporary increase because the merge briefly counts as two profiles.

Regarding the unknown parents display, you linked to Clancy-1515, Clancy-9 is what survived the merge. When you mouseover that number as a link the parents display normally.

22 hours later, the quirks have indeed righted themselves.
