Genealogy Bank is another pay site, which covers some places Newspapers.com doesn't. I use it for Jersey City, New Jersey, for example.
Quote from a facebook post by a user, "This site literally made the last six months of my father's life some of the best of his life. The stories I was able to dig up about his family and some that he had always told us that I was able to confirm! Unbelievable stories! God bless you for what you do. You made an old man happy and made my relationship with my father so much closer."
The Library of Congress has many newspapers digitalized, access them through Chronicling America. Many of the states have digitalized many other newspapers such as Washington State has Washington Digital Newspapers and Virginia has Virginia Chronicle. Check the area you are focusing on.
An excellent index for U.S. newspapers is https://ldsgenealogy.com/dir/. Click on the state then county or city. Then click on Newspapers and Obituaries. You'll get a list of historical newspapers pertinent to that jurisdiction including links to online newspapers and a list of offline ones.
