What do I do with Saints for towns or parishes?

  • St Cuthberts, Bedfordshire
  • Wisbech St Peter, Cambridgeshire
  • St Mary, Leicestershire
  • Leicester, St Margaret, Leicestershire
  • Leicester, St Luke, Leicestershire

I'm trying to add categories

Saint is generally abbreviated rather than spelled Saint in full. Check with Vision of Britain for the approved spelling. If abbreviated , it will be  "St" with no full stop (US=period) following it.

Some of the items will be places and some are churches (Wisbech St Peter, Cambridgeshire)

Start from here in the England locations.

Towns / Villages are nested under their Counties.

Churches are nested under the locations in which they are found.

It looks like "St Cuthberts, Bedfordshire" is the parish of St Cuthbert, Bedford, Bedfordshire. It hasn't got a category yet.

The churches of St Mary and St Margaret, Leicester have categories but St Luke does not.

So St Cuthbert, Bedford, Bedfordshire and St Luke both need categories.

The England Project doesn't use urban ecclesiastical parishes as location categories, so unless there is evidence that the person used that specific church the location category should simply be the town: "Bedford, Bedfordshire" or "Leicester, Leicestershire". You could use the religious congregation category for a baptism or marriage; or the cemetery category for a burial.

Judy - as Stephen said, if you find a baptism at St Cuthbert, Bedford or a burial at St Luke, Leicester (he probably won't be buried at this church as urban graveyards were closed by that time for sanitation reasons) then we will create those categories. Categories are only created when there is a sourced reason for putting a profile in it, so we don't end up with an empty category!

In that profile, the only one called out as a church is St. Peter, Wesbech, Cambridge, England for the marriage.

The correct spelling is Wisbech, so yes, it already has a profile.
