G2G: New app: Canadian Census Citation Creator

Introducing the Canadian Census Citation Creator app!  This app (thanks to a direct request by a fellow WikiTreer, thanks Tim for this rabbit hole!), will allow you to create a source citation for any record on the Library and Archives Canada - Censuses website.

To use the app - you only have to fill in two pieces of information - the URL of the Item information page, and then the text on that page (Select All - Copy - Paste).  Press the Compile Citation - and the app does the rest of the work for you.  (It's very similar to other Source Citation apps I've built).

You can also add bonus information that is on the census record, but hasn't been saved in the database, like household members.

A YouTube video gives you a quick demo of how to use the app.

NOTES: This app currently works on the existing Census pages (in English) - not on the NEW version of the site that is still in development.  I will add support to the newer version once it's finalized.

ALSO: I do plan to add this type of support directly into Rob Pavey's amazing WikiTree Sourcer browser extension - but - in the short term, you can use this app - and - for those who are nervous about using extensions, the app will always be there for you.

As always - let me know where you find bugs! Enjoy!

Thank you, Greg, for another nice piece of work!  I bookmarked it and placed it next to my bookmark for the Canadian Census site.

This is great as I know I  have profiles for people who emigrated to Canada. I look forward to trying this out and seeing the integration with WikiTree Sourcer app.

Hi, just watched the Friday Night Bingo session (or at least part of it, rest will follow).

This also screams for a bookmarklet. Please add two url parameters (maybe use REQUEST, in case the amount of text requires post instead) for the content and the URL. Then you can get all the text with ``document.body.innerText`` and can hand it over together with window.location ;)

If you add the parameters, I could also do the JS part, if you want.

I knew you'd think of that. ... and to be honest, I was thinking about it myself.  I will add the URL parameters and let you know when that goes live.  Today is Father's Day (in Canada at least!), so pretty sure I won't be online much today - but sometime this week.

 - Greg

Funny. Our father's day already was in May.

I think I could also send a post request mimicking a form. Maybe I'll try that later.

Greg, Thanks for the great app.  Your instructional video was great too.  Guess it's been a minute since I referenced a bac-lac census record and the site seems to have completely changed over to the new format.  I am lost about how to cite the source properly.  Do you have any tips?  Do you plan to update your app?

Sincerely,

Leah
