"Removed sticker per Guide Lines"
WikiTree profile: Arch Gam
in WikiTree Help by Harold Whitbread G2G Crew (800 points)

I would message the person who removed the sticker and ask what was wrong in it's usage. I looked at the stickers page and it looks like you were using the sticker correctly but I don't normally work too much on Australian profiles

Australia Project Boxes and Stickers - List of (wikitree.com)

Guidelines say

"They should not be placed by someone who does not actively follow the profile and who has not otherwise contributed to it, unless they communicate with the Profile Manager before or when the Sticker is placed.  Stickers can be removed by any contributor to the profile. They should not be added back without communicating with this contributor.  Stickers should not be included if any contributor does not want them there."

Other than adding born-in stickers to profiles he does not manage, and is not on the Trusted Lists of, Harold has not contributed to those profiles.  He also disagrees with the use of the word "Australia" for post 1817 pre-1901 profiles.

As the manager I made the decision it was unnecessary to add a colony sticker when the person never left the state.

Further to the second sentence of Melanie's middle paragraph, the Australia, Project Guidelines - Australian BDM Location Fields Acceptable Formats section says:

The (3) acceptable formats, reflect the differering preferences of members, all of which are currently considered valid. Usage of any of the "Acceptable" location formats will not generate any data suggestions. They should not be changed on member-managed profiles, without consultation with the profile manager.

[State], Australia is one of the three acceptable formats.

Mel, as the profile manager you are perfectly entitled to remove any sticker and to replace your preferred location format. As Jim pointed out, New, South Wales, Australia is a valid and acceptable preference for pre-1901 Australian profiles.

Thank you, Margaret.

It's worth noting that the term "Australia" was increasingly used from about 1820 on. See this Google Books Ngram.

Thank you for the support, Margaret.  I have explained my preference to not use a "born in" sticker on certain profiles, and why.  I have also suggested that perhaps the non-migrating ancestor sticker might fit instead.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie was the first to use "Australia" in official documents in 1817.  It was in 1830 that the first officially published use occurred.
To quote Wikipedia:

The first time that Australia appears to have been officially used was in April 1817, when Governor Lachlan Macquarie acknowledged the receipt of Flinders' charts of Australia from Lord Bathurst. In December 1817, Macquarie recommended to the Colonial Office that it be formally adopted. In 1824, the Admiralty agreed that the continent should be known officially by that name. The first official published use of the new name came with the publication in 1830 of The Australia Directory by the Hydrographic Office.

Mel, you don't need to explain your preference for either having/not having a sticker, or your preference for location field formats. All are your choice as profile manager.

Melanie Paul

"He" does not contribute directly with your managed Gam profiles, but his wife Usher-957 does. Janelle is a Great Grand Niece of Jacob Gam and closely related to all the  Gam family, of which you are manager of most of them. I cannot see any relationship with you and the Gams.        My research on the matter came up with the following NSW Gov. information,  ,https://www.migrationheritage.nsw.gov.au/exhibition/objectsthroughtime-history/ott1901/index.html#:~:text=Before%201900%2C%20there%20was%20no,was%20little%20communication%20between%20them

Harold, to be PM of a profile does not require anyone to be related.

If you feel strongly that the stickers are incorrect, concerning use of Colony and Australia, that should be taken up with the Australia project and Templates project, not arguing with the PM of a profile who feels differently and is following the guidelines of a sticker.

Without being sure of the history on these issues, I suspect that both the WikiTree policy on adding and removing stickers and the Australia Project guidelines on location formats have deliberately been framed to provide definitive answers so as to resolve cases of dispute. What they stipulate is quite clear.
