I don’t know if this is the correct group to ask, but I thought I’d give it a shot. If this isn’t the correct group to address, please direct me to the appropriate one.

I’m looking for information on a marriage between Jane/Jone/Joan Kirby and John Duyne/Duijn/Duijne/Duyn in Amsterdam, North Holland, in 1659. As far as I can tell, Jane Kirby was a longtime member of the “Engelse Nederlands Hervormde” (English Protestant) church in Amsterdam. In 1659, she married John Duijn. He may have been a Dutchman prior to the marriage because I can find no mention of him prior to 1659 in the church membership records.

This is the first mention of John Duijn in the church records on April 16, 1659. Jane (Kirby) Duyne is one of his sponsors.

This is a membership record that lists both of them as members of the church. John Duyne became a member in 1659. Jane had been a member for some time. She was first listed as Kirby and then became Duijn/Duyne.

It appears John Duyn became a church Elder in 1690:

I don’t know when Jane passed, but John passed around 1673:

My questions are:

Does anyone know where the mid-1600s marriage and birth records are for the Engelse Nederlands Hervormde (English-Dutch Protestant) church in Amsterdam? I’d like to find out if Jane Kirby and John/Johanna Duyne/Duijne/Duijn/Duijnen had any children that survived to adulthood.

Also, is Jane Kirby any relation to the Kirbys’ in Hertfordshire/Warwick England, some of whom migrated to New England?

My grandmother was a Duijn and traces her ancestry back to Krommenie, North Holland, which is not that far (about 15 km) from Amsterdam. What is unusual is that 99% of my Dutch family tree uses the patronymic naming convention prior to 1800 except for the Duijns, who going back to the late 1600s (the earliest records I can find) have always used the Duijn surname. There could be no connection whatsoever, but I’m curious to find out whether there possibly is. I have a gap of approximately 30 years between John and Jane Duijne at the English-Dutch church and the earliest Duijn (Sijmen Jansz Duijn), residing in Krommenie, in my family tree.

Thank you!

Hi T. I have a recollection of being down this road in some previous research and learning that there was a period of time for which the birth registers no longer exist. What I  cannot recall for certain was if this was for the English church in Amsterdam or in Leyden. I will see if I kept any notes.

I would try adding these tags to your post: sources, England, Mayflower and Netherlands and New_Netherland.

I'm not sure that any of the above groups can help, but it will widen your net.
