Cardinal Newman, Lord Mayor of London?

I have an image of Henry Newman's 50th wedding anniversary in Canada where the newspaper says he was the grandson of "Cardinal Newman who was Lord Mayor of London during Queen Victoria's reign". His father John Newman's marriage solemnization record says John's father is William Newman, who was a porter.

Is this a mis-interpretation of someone's name/position by whoever was reporting the event? It's such a specific thing to add to the paper. Preliminary googling of a Cardinal Newman brings up the priest John William Newman and no Lord Mayor with a 'Newman' on Wikipedia.

Cardinals are not known for having children... legitimate ones anyway.

As you say there were no Lord mayors of London called Newman

Cardinal Newman had no children so no grandchildren. He was a celibate priest. Initially he was a Church of England Priest. He then  converted to Roman Catholicism becoming a cardinal. At that time, if  he was married, he would not have been able to become a RC priest. (very recently married ex Anglican priest have been able to be ordained as RC priests but not in the 19th C.)

Maybe it was a joke that was wrongly interpreted. Maybe John Henry was named after him.

Matthew, Don't forget that this is the Anglican Church, our Episcopalian church, where Priests do marry & have children. Be well, Jack MacDonald-Hilton

Please see previous answer to the  question, which explains who Cardinal Newman was - quite an important figure in the Catholic Church and extensively written about. He was also celibate in his short stint as an Anglican, before he converted.

Thanks T. Gibson, I know it’s not the done thing, but the obituary did make me smile (not only a cardinal but Lord a mayor of London too!)
