G2G: Did you see that Tree Apps no longer require a second login?

Hi WikiTreers,

Until today, Tree Apps <https://www.wikitree.com/apps/> required a second login. That is, even if you were logged-in to WikiTree you had to login a second time to use apps. This is because they use a separate server and are managed by independent developers.

We figured out a way to remove this requirement without compromising privacy or security. If you notice any problems that could be related, please post here. Thank you!

Thank you.  Will test later.

I seem to be stuck in a circular loop on "Match WikiTree Watchlist to FamilySearch Family Tree", which I was using daily, because once I've matched them and cleaned up the bio, I make sure the profiles are open and orphaned to allow others to work on them.

Do you still access it the same way?  I go to the "Find" menu on the main WikiTree page and click on FamilySearch Matches.  The next page prompts me to sign in to both WikiTree and FamilySearch (obviously, I'm already logged into WikiTree).  Clicking on the WikiTree button takes me to the "Login to WikiTree Apps", as it did in the past.  Logging in there takes me back to the "Match WikiTree Watchlist to FamilySearch Family Tree" page and WikiTree is not logged in.  Clicking on the WikiTree button again just takes me back through the same circle.  I cleared cookies and caches, but I'm assuming it's on WikiTree's end, since apparently logging in to the Tree Apps api is no longer necessary, but that's the page you're taken to.

Any insight would be appreciated!

I have the same issue - and it is a process I do most days.  It hasn't worked since yesterday!

kind regards...........Nigel

I am also having the same issue.  More detail:  When I complete the Family Search sign in, it says "Signed in with Family Search as Bartley McRorie."

But signing into WikiTree just takes me back to sign in again, as described by JJ above.

The FamilySearch matches app is separate from the Tree Apps, so the login in separate.

Ah!  Okay, I'll post this is an issue in a separate thread.  Thank you!

@ Jamie:  The issue is not that the login is separate, but that the login does not work!  Try to log in, and it sends you back to log in!  Thanks.

Right, but that doesn't have to do with the Tree Apps login. While they both use the API, they are separate things.

So, how do we fix it?

I have the same problem: wiki tree login not accepted (was accepted b4 but not now. Once in to both sites (Family S and Wiki it logs me out of WikiT again.

Yes, I did see that, and am grateful!

It was worth your efforts to make the system easier to use!  Thanks again!

Not until I saw this announcement.  Thank you so much! This has been so confusing for our new members (and probably a bunch of us oldies, too).

I have logged in twice on Wednesday morning and both times had to do the second log in, tree apps, to find unsourced New York 19th
century profile list.  It doesn't appear to be working for me.

Hi Beulah, which of the Tree Apps were you trying to access when you were asked to login?

I was using the Rootssearch to add sources to profiles.  At 3:30 Wednesday afternoon it is now working correctly.

Update:  Thursday morning, 8:30, again requiring a rootssearch sign in after the wikitree sign in.

RootsSearch is not part of the Tree Apps, although it does also use the API.

Using profile: Alford-3175

OS: Chrome, Windows 11

Logged in to Wikitree.  Selected Tree apps and directed output to a new window.  Selected each app in the drop-down box of applications:  Each app opened without a request for login.

Selected each app in Other Apps:

  • Fail Ancestor Explorer requested a login after filling in all 3 boxes and "Generate List"
  • Fail Ancestor Statistics: immediate request for login
  • Fail Bio Check:  same
  • Fail Brick Wall Ancestors: same
  • Pass Dynamic Tree by Topola: displayed tree for Eliz. Alford
  • Pass Maps: first link displayed map for Dekalb county, Georgia.
  • Pass Profile Overview: displayed profiles beginning with Eliz. Alford.
  • Fail Research with RootsSearch: request for Wikitree login
  • Pass Tree Widgets displays information sheet opened with widgeted trees for Eliz. Alford.

The apps in Other Apps aren't integrated yet, so those may require a separate login to the apps server.

Just realized my question went as a reply to Peggy, instead of on the post itself.  Just in case that means Chris won't get pinged, I'll copy/paste it here.  Thank you!

Like JJ, my report was a comment above, but it should append to JJ's answer - so here 'tis:

Hi Chirs,

Thanks for this information.

The WikiTree Watchlist FS Matching App/function no longer seems to be working.

Oops. There goes the tree...

I just get a couple of empty slots without function or purpose.

Can you be more specific Frank? Are you having issues with one of the apps on the Tree Apps tab?

I hit Tree Apps just above my pedigree and I get two blank boxes under Tree App. One following Tree App and ID followed by another (eg. Windsor-1 faintly on the interior). The first blank box features a blank drop-down box.

As of now I haven't been able to make sense of either as the first box won't let me enter letters into it.

Ancestor Explorer stopped working for me, no sign-in, but it looks like it is starting to work, but then page goes blank.. I tried Brick Walls, and it works, but I had to sign in again first (which does not really bother me).

The apps under the "Other Apps" dropdown aren't integrated yet, so each of those handles the login on its own.

For some apps it shows them right away under https://www.wikitree.com/apps/ but if I click More Apps and then go to the Dynamic Tree by Topola which is one of my favourites, it still requires me to log in. And when I try to log in, instead, it doesn't.
by Henk Elemans G2G1 (1.8k points)

The apps under "More Apps" aren't part of the combined "Tree Apps" code, so they each handle logins separately.
