Advice before merging these pre-1700 Stephenson profiles?

Stephenson-10102 is a duplicate of Stephenson-855 (side-by-side comparison) so they should be merged.

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding?

Or perhaps someone with more WikiTree experience would like to complete the merge? Let me know if you do. Thanks!

They died in different places so it is possible they were different people. Stephensons had many similar names back then.

They were married to the same woman though.

I would imagine they are the same man & the details of the couple perhaps come from a marriage record?

James Stephenson appears twice because two different Stephenson families from different areas have claimed the couple as parents for their ancestor(s).

I suppose the question is, what is reliably sourced and what is unsupported? Do you leave one of the James’ with Elizabeth and their sourced children, and disconnect the second James and the unsupported children. Or do you merge and disconnect the wrong children from the remaining couple?

As an aside, the wife of the two James Stephensons is herself pretty suspect. She appears on WikiTree to be the product of a brother/sister relationship (I doubt this is the real situation, but her father, Robert Simpson, is purportedly the son of a Michael Sampson; unfortunately the source added to Michael Sampson shows that Elizabeth Simpson’s alleged mother, Lettice Forward, is actually a daughter of the same Michael Sampson & Forward is her married name.)
