Citations not connecting back to source

I am having trouble going back and using my citations to re-link to the source.  I have been doing them this way for months and suddenly I am getting errors.  If I manually put in the URL it connects.  What am I doing wrong?

Example: U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 at Ancestry.com

[https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/211659:7836?tid  U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900]  at Ancestry.com

Error:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to click.linksynergy.com. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

Laurie, this isn't an answer to your question, but a concern about the specific source you're citing here; you might want to take a look at:

When a WikiTree profile links to Ancestry via either a plain link or a template the WikiTree web site converts it to an affiliate link. This is one way that WikiTree is able to generate some income.

In the last week or so Ancestry changed the partner that they use for affiliate links. They changed from Partnerize to Rakuten. WikiTree had to update for this. Links using Rakuten have linksynergy in the start of the URL.

That is all background. I am not seeing any problems with these new links but it sounds like they are failing for you. Is this still happening? Perhaps you have a blocker installed in your browser that doesn't like them. For example here is a blocker that talks about blocking them.

The link in the first source on your linked profile works OK for me. If you are still having problems you could try removing the "?tid " from the end of the link as that is extraneous. E.g. change:

https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/211659:7836?tid

to

https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/211659:7836

thanks.  removing the ?tid didn't help

i will look into the browser/blocker issue.

Thanks for the explanation of the overall problem with the Ancestry.com links and templates, Rob!

To add to Rob's analysis of the new WikiTree relationship with Rakuten Advertising, it really isn't materially different than the previous one with a company called Partnerize. Many of us noticed the Partnerize factor only when the links to Ancestry "broke" a few days ago.

WikiTee's privacy policy clearly states its use of third-party services, so that's certainly nothing new. But what isn't immediately clear is that we're also implicitly agreeing to Rakuten Advertising's policies when we click on one of those links.

For those who might be interested, the Rakuten policies can be found here:
