Hi everyone!

500px-Meet_our_Members_Photos-132.jpgIt's time to get to know another one of our wonderful WikiTreers. This week's member is Dave Draper

Dave became a Wiki Genealogist in June 2021. He is active in our Notables Project and is part of the Appreciation Team in our Tree Huggers Project

When and how did you get interested in genealogy?

My genealogy journey started in April 2021. My grandson, Colin, had to prepare a family school report. I realized then the need search for my family heritage.

How long have you been on WikiTree?

I signed the WikiTree Honor Code June of 2021. I needed a place to document my family with a way for my children to access it.  WikiTree was the only place I found to reach my goals. At the time, I didn’t understand that WT is one family tree, or what that meant.

What a surprise to find over 30 cousins were already very busy documenting our Draper family.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

Now that I am in my early 70’s, my interests have been reduced to my wonderful wife, 5 children and 11 grandchildren!

Writing songs and playing piano is still a treasured activity.

How has your genealogical research focus evolved since you started?

First I needed to find my pedigree. Next I focused on all the siblings of all my grandfathers and all their children. That evolved into finding their burials, 4.600 to date and documented on a WT free space page. The last phase was to collect the family stories. Lately, I have become more active on the G2G helping others, becoming involved in the Notables Project and entertaining WT members with my silly parodies (rock songs with the lyrics changed to genealogy themes) and with original genealogy poems.

Are you are interested in certain locations?

Farnham, Richmond County, Virgina, USA!  Our Draper history started there in the year 1690.  In December 2021, my wife and I traveled there from Illinois. Virginia has many “burnt” counties (lost records) and I didn’t expect to find the mailboxes and driveways of my forefathers who lived there. I just wanted to breath in the beauty of the area and listen to wind sing the song my forefathers heard. I stood where my forefathers stood and saw what they saw! I felt a sense of calm come over me. I realized I had come home after 332 years!

Do you have a favorite ancestor?

Ira Dillingham Draper (1814 -1891) is my favorite great great grandfather. The story of his life and family are what Hollywood movies are made of!  He was a pioneer who settled in Iowa next to Wyatt Earp’s father and hid runaway slaves on his farm.  He was a station master on the Underground Railroad. The Missouri slave owners put a bounty out to have the whole family killed!  They escaped by abandoning their farm and traveling 200 miles to Nebraska.  In Nebraska, he signed a contract with the Pony Express and his son Ira (Draper-4306) carried the mail on a sub route between Falls City and Pawnee City, Nebraska.

His son William founded the town of Noraville, now called Dawson, and went on to lay out the streets of Sundance, Wyoming. These incredible stories were almost lost!  The biggest ranchers in Wyoming descend from his daughter Ruth “Draper” Barlow.

What interesting discoveries have you made?

In 1983 I lettered the office windows of a businessman who had two employees. That world wide business today employees over 10,000.  He was married to my first cousin, from another Draper branch, and I had no clue!  Not knowing my family cost me a lucrative place in that business as it grew.  I would have asked the guy for a job had I known that!

At my great “retirement job”, a co-worker asked me to find how she was related to Daniel Boone.  I made over 200 profiles on her family and did not find Daniel Boone!  I FOUND ME!  Yes, her and I share a grandfather!

What is your toughest brick wall currently?

Thomas Draper (1690 – 1735) Richmond County Virginia,  The passage of time and lost records has made it impossible to verify his forefathers.

What is your favorite feature or function on WikiTree?

Connection Finder is my favorite function. I have discovered I am related or connected to just about everybody on WT!  Well, it seems that way!

What could we do to inspire more people to participate in our mission?

Testimonials and referrals!  When I was the owner of Draper the Signmaker, my business grew from testimonials and referrals.  My wife, who resisted at first to become a WT member, saw first hand how I benefited. When she discovered her roots, she was hooked! It is hard to see the personal benefits from advertisements unless there is an appealing “hook".

What  are your thoughts looking back over the last two years?

WikiTree has changed my life. It brought my extended family together. I have a heritage I never knew and wonderful cousins to talk to, and amazing WT members ready to help and associate with.  I found incredible stories to pass on to my children and grandchildren. I can’t thank WikiTree staff and all the members enough!  Thank you all for an amazing ride on the rollercoaster of genealogy!

Thank you David I enjoy your poem and your help on wikitree, we are lucky to find a magnificent person like your self.

Thank you for all your help and work you are simply the best

Is this THE Dave Draper???

I'm waiting for you to do a parody mixed with genealogical terms. If you do a song (searching for English/Irish ancestors) based on "Come on Eileen," I would be shocked.

Thanks for being a great Tree Hugger.
by Eileen Robinson G2G6 Pilot (228k points)

Thanks Rick!  Rick and David are 10th cousins

And Eileen, that is one complicated song to try to parody!  I downloaded the lyrics and I am studying it.  Do you have back song up in mind? Gheesh!  This might take a while.

How about: You're some Kind Of Wonderful" by Grand Funk Railroad  (for a Wonderful WikiTreer) devil

Eileen and David are 23rd cousins once removed

Or... We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel.

Thanks Dave for the wonderful insight into the Draper family.

You made me laugh more than once.  Also I've been enjoying the parodies to the music I remember so well!

Keep up all that you do for WT Dave.

Thanks Bartley!  On your profile page:

I have a coffee cup on my DESK (I use for a pen holder) that says the same exact same thing!  Who knew?wink

Anonymous Fitzgerald, now M. Fitzgerald has a picture of a T-shirt with that slogan on it.  I have no idea where that originated, but it hits my funny bone!  Where did you get the mug?  I could use another pen holder, but I should probably find the T-shirt instead!

Amazon! yes  $16.99 (free shipping as a Prime member!wink

heart the mug! I will have to get onesmiley

Excellent interview with Dave Draper, Eowyn.

Dave, I'm amazed that genealogy only became an interest in April 2021.  How you have progressed from then is mind-blowing.  You are a treasure to WikiTree.

What a nice interview. It's funny to read why and how you (and your wife) became hooked on genealogy (at WikiTree).

Now I also know that you're part of the Appreciation team and I never knew there's a Wikitree Huggers team. I've learned a lot by only reading your interview. Thanks
