G2G: New member introducing myself

I am Brad Legge and believe that I may descend from the Dartmouth Legges. I have researched the family extensively, but lack absolute evidence that my line runs truely back to George, Viscount Lewisham. I’m looking for that evidence and hope to contribute to the project.

There is some evidence that George had a son George early 1733, making Elizabeth Kaye pregnant at his death in 1732. This is from where I think I am descended. I believe that George, born in 1733, had a sons John, Joseph and Thomas and a daughter named Mary.

I’m wondering if anyone knows if this is true and if so, did he become estranged from his family?

Hi Bradley,

I also have the same dilemma as I believe that I also have descended from George Legge who, perhaps, was the son of George, Viscount Lewisham and Elizabeth Kaye, however I have is birth as about 1722.

Therein lies the problem. I cannot be sure of his parentage - Robert Vincent William Legge, from Tasmania, claims him to be the son of George Legge and Elizabeth Kaye  - If so, why was he not the 2nd Earl of Dartmouth? - If Robert Vincent William Legge is correct then perhaps he may have been the illegitimate son of George Legge and Elizabeth Kaye who were married in Yorkshire on 27 MAR 1722.

My records have George (born 1722 or 1733) with 2 sons - John (1756-1802) who married Margaret White (1761-1818) on 14 MAR 1785 in Ramsgate, Kent (Source: England, Kent, Canterbury Parish Registers, 1538-1986  GBPRS/CANT/M/97146160/1) and Francis (? - ?) who married Mary Ann Doughty (? - ?) on 10 FEB 1785 in Thanet Kent (Source: International Genealogical Index (R) - which is not very reliable).

I am a direct descendant from John Legge (1756-1802) through Joseph Legge (1785-1862) - Joseph Sims Legge(1807-?) - John Morday Legge (1839-1906) - Frances May Legge (1894-1960) who was my maternal grandmother.

So welcome, cousin Bradley. I am interested to see where you fit into this family maze.

Cheers,

Hi Brad,

Welcome to WikiTree! I am Dave Draper and I am delighted to see you join our community. Here, we are passionate about building a single family tree and discovering our ancestry. I hope you find WikiTree as exciting and rewarding as I have. There is a learning curve so here is a link that might help you get started. WikiTree How To Here is How To Do IT

Please feel free to ask anyone about anything on this G2G forum!

Now, that being said, if you add your pedigree to WikiTree as far back as you can go, before you hit that "Brick Wall", you will see magical connections and relationships appear here for you.  Because this is a "Community Tree", and not a personal tree, connections are made between members who have entered their families into the system.

Here is an example:  My wife was not really warming up to Wikitree and the power it has until we discovered several of her cousins had already added many of her family members.  Those entries tied in with other members who had entered their families, which led back to Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland!  Yes, my wife is his great grand daughter!  I married a princes and she is not letting me live it down!wink  Then we found out we were 17th cousins!  OH MY!  we didn't see that coming! surprise

Magical things happen here!  It will happen to you also!  You will find that you are related to more than Notables than you can possibly imagine!
