I have a couple who immigrated to New Zealand on the ship Tinandra on 23 Feb 1842. Is there a database of ships to N.Z. as there is for Australia?

Hi Doug

Yes there is an Index of Ships that came to New Zealand here on Wikitree - https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:Immigrant_Ships_to_New_Zealand, with the voyages of each ship sub-categorised under each named ship.

and an Index of all the voyages ( in cronological order) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Shipping_to_New_Zealand_Ports

Now not all ships have a category and not all voyages are listed (these have been mostly added on request as thee have been identified and linked to one or more profiles )

In your case the "Timandra" is there - Timandra (1841)

and the voyage your looking for is there too - Timandra, sailed 2 November 1841 - she left plymouth, England on the 2 November 1841 and arrived at New Plymouth, New Zealand on the 23 February 1842

'tely'

PS. there is also a category, for profiles, were a ship is known but isnt in the index and that is Immigrant_Ships_to_New_Zealand_needs_Category were a profile can be temporary categorised until they are created.

There are passenger list archives on FamilySearch (provided by Archives New Zealand): New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, Passenger Lists, 1839-1973

This may be your Sarah, circa 1841.

From the main passenger list page, click on "Browse all Images" button. Then you can select a port and year, and see ship names covered by the database. May not be the exact format you are looking for, but there is a wealth of information there.

Thanks, Steve, but that wasn't quite what I was asking. For Australian immigrants, both convict and free, each ship has its own category, and as each new ship is mentioned, a category is created; see [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Categories_Waiting_to_be_Added_or_Renamed]

I was enquiring whether a similar scheme existed for New Zealand ships.  I recall that in my early days here, there was somebody looking after ships to New Zealand, but I have not heard of anything as formal as the Aussie scheme.  At the same time, the "related Questions" beneath mine suggest that some scheme exists.

Sorry Doug, that definitely was clear on my end. As far as I am aware, there is no such scheme available.

Hi Doug,

I have a NZ colleague who's a genealogist, and he keeps track of immigrant ships here:

See if this helps.
