Advice for categorization of Burke-11278?

I'm  doing historical as well as genealogical research on Burke-11278 and would like to create a category that includes everyone connected to him rather than just relatives. In that respect, my vision would not fit neatly into the name category. I was thinking something like "William Burke Project" to designate broader connections. Thoughts? Thanks for your help.

Not sure what your goal is. Everyone connected to him, if he's connected to the tree, is EVERYONE.

How about a personal category for your research? [[Category:Miller-93757 William Burke Connections]]

I want to show his many connections besides family relations, including his friends and business partners. Your suggestion seems like a good one, but use his ID as the base. I didn't see any category names that long, so I was trying to keep it shorter.

Hi Burke. There is more information about the personal categories Natalie mentions at this link:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Personal_Categories

Thank you. I read that information, but my proposal did not seem to fit neatly into the parameters in the Personal Categories section.
I've been through the category creation materials a bunch of times. Does someone have to create the category for me?

Hi again Burke. Have you read this page?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Free-Space_Projects

It gives examples of projects, some of which may be similar to what you want.

The first step would be to set up the free-space page for your project. The above Help page then says

All free-space projects should be categorized. This way others can find them. You can use Category:Projects but it is more important to use the regional category or other more-specific category hierarchy where others are likely to be looking for it.

You can indeed create the category yourself, but further discussion about that would be worthwhile on G2G after you have set up the free-space page.

Thanks so much, Jim. I really appreciate your time helping me.

I have read about Free-Space Projects, but may not understand their functionality well enough.  I'd like to be able to connect William Burke to not only his relatives, but with the family trees of his associates. I am managing several lines of people not related to him (that I know of yet) to find their points of commonality. It would help to be able to brand each of those profiles as being connected to WB to create some kind of overall list. Then, it would be great to have those connections further categorized by relationship or region or occupation or church or something else. Does that sense?

Maybe a personal category would work? If I add each person he knew to his category, would I be able to see them all listed together on the category page? Then maybe I could subcategorize?
Yes, Burke, I think personal categories would be helpful for you. Personal categories like other categories have a page listing each member of the category. Also, you can indeed subcategorise using personal categories.

In any case, a free-space page to describe your work would be good, whether or not you formally set up a Free-Space Project. Such a page could both help you organise what you are doing, and inform other people about it.
Jim, thanks again! You've offered a good plan. Who creates the personal page?

You can set up the personal category yourself, using the instructions at

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Personal_Categories#How_To_Set_Up_Your_Personal_Category

You can also make a free-space page here:

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?action=newspace

Tip: instead of a title, use an abbreviation including absolutely no punctuation marks or special characters. The first time you edit the free-space page, set the Page Name field to the heading you actually want for the page. Punctuation marks in page titles cause endless nuisance later.

Good luck with the project, Burke!

Thanks again, Jim!

I had been having trouble getting the category to create, but got it figured out now and have been adding all sorts of important sub-categories. The set up you suggested works fine without needing to start a project. Your help has been indispensable!!!
Great to hear, Burke! I'm glad the suggestions were helpful. Best of luck with your work.

@Burke, the personal categories you've set up are incorrect, the top category has to be your WikiTree ID and then the sub category names all must begin with your WT ID (see Natalie's answer above).

The top category will be [[ Category: Miller-93757 ]]. I can set these up for you if you tell me what you want the others called. Perhaps something like [[ Category: Miller-93757 William Burke Family ]] ?

I've set up Miller-93757 but the others need to be renamed, as per previous comment.

Hi Margaret. I set up the category for William Burke. Is that not permissible?

Burke, personal category names must begin with your WikiTree ID, so the category currently named Burke-11278 could be renamed [[ Category: Miller-93757 William Burke Project ]] or whatever wording you want, but it must start with your WT ID.

Thanks, Margaret.
