G2G: Opening Sources in New Tab

At the moment, when we click on a source in a profile, the source opens in the same tab. I have lost count of the number of times that I have shut down the source, only to realise that I have also shut down the profile. Could we please have the sources open in a new tab, just like many other features of WikiTree?

Hi Barbara. I suspect that would be technically difficult, and it might not be desirable to change the global behaviour which people are used to: many may want source and other links in profiles to open in the same tab.

Instead, the way I deal with this is by making it a habit to use a right mouse click (long-press on an iPad) and selecting the option in the popup menu to open the link in a new tab. That achieves the behaviour you are requesting through conscious user choice, instead of something applied to everyone.

On the other hand, maybe the WikiTree Browser Extension developers would consider adding this as an option, which people could turn on or not, according to their individual preference.

Well, you learn something new every day! Thanks Jim - now all I have to do is to remember to right-click.

When I open a source link I first right click on it, which opens a drop down box with the options to open in a new tab or to open in a new window, along with other options.

You can hold ctrl when clicking,  to save time

Or, on a Mac, hold the apple key and left click to open in a new tab.

Barbara, you didn't say what browser you use, but that may be a selection you can make.  In Firefox, under the Settings menu, you can tell the browser to open a link in a new tab or a new window when you click on it.  I would expect that other browsers have a similar setting, but I don't know for sure.

I've a vague recollection that I did this on an old computer but I can't see where to do it now. I'm using Chrome.

If you Google "always open link in new tab in Chrome" you get a whole list of hits, including a YouTube video.  I have been tied up on and off with something else and haven't checked out all those hits, but you can probably find an answer in there fairly quickly (he says with fingers crossed)..

I stand corrected.  It looks like the easiest way to force a link to open in  a new tab is to right click the link and then select new tab from the menu that pops up (i.e., it takes two clicks).  Or if you're on a desktop computer with a mouse, you can just click on the center wheel of the mouse rather than the left or right keys.  It appears that Firefox and Chrome both work like that.

I also saw something that suggested you can install an extension in Chrome that will cause it to happen automatically, but I didn't pursue that any further.
