2023 WikiTree Challenge 9: The week has ended for the Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research (SHHAR) [closed]

Hello WikiTreers!

In each WikiTree Challenge we partner with another group in the worldwide genealogy community. Together we research seven degrees of connections for seven starting people chosen by our partner.

Challenge #9 was a lot of fun! Our partner was the Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research (SHHAR).  They were established in 1986 with the aim of assisting individuals in researching their Hispanic genealogy and family history. Their mission is to delve into the fascinating world of Hispanic genealogy and inspire individuals to preserve and chronicle their personal histories, and share them with others.

Our week began Thursday, May 25, at noon EDT (4pm UTC) and ended June 1, at noon EDT. You didn't need any particular skills to participate, so everyone was welcome to join us. If you did happen to have any experience with Hispanic records then your experience was especially valuable!

We used the posts for the seven starting ancestors below to claim connection bounties, brick wall bounties, ask questions, or just comment with interesting finds. You didn't need to list your contributions, the challenge tracking automatically did that.

We rocked the week!

Connected to the tree by linking her to her Husband who was already on WT.
Way to go Celia!!
I don't see any obvious records for her and her siblings but there are two guys with the last name Grumbles in the 1885 NM census in Lincoln NM (Jefferson Davis Grumbles-179 and his brother Stonewall, not on WT).  Both of them seem to be accounted for elsewhere, but it's possible there's another sibling/relative in the area.  (to add another coincidence, they do have a sibling named Cora, so it's a family name.)

Timoteo Morin Milan was born in Bocas, México. He went to Texas to work as a laborer in the Texas fields in September 1920. He helped found a medical clinic there.

Brick Wall Ancestor: José Asuncion Morín Solved!!

Adding paternal grandparents as per baptismal record with source links to FamilySearch.
Thanks Natalie!

Running into a couple head-scratchers while trying to determine Asuncion's parents. His death record lists them as Desiderio Morin and Maria Apolonia, however when I search for more records on Desiderio to confirm his vital details, all records seem to show him married to a Maria Irinea Silva

Unfortunately, none of Asuncion's children's baptismal records list the grandparents (as far as I can see). There are a couple other children around Asuncion's age in Bocas and the surrounding towns that list their parents as Desiderio Moren and Irinea Silva.

There are a couple possibilities with this information:

 1. Asuncion's father is a different Desiderio than the one married to Irinea Silva.
 2. Asuncion's father is the same Desiderio married to Irinea Silva, and was married to another woman named Apolonia (unlikely, as he has had kids by Irinea both before and after Asuncion).
 3. Maria Apolonia and Maria Irinea Silva are the same woman. It was not uncommon to have several given names, and the scribe for Asuncion's death record unfortunately only listed a first name and not a last.
With all of that said, I don't have enough information to confirm or deny any of the above theories, but I wanted to lay out what I found in case someone else decided to pick up where I left off.

Adding children with source links to FamilySearch.org.  The Ancestry.com views are on the father's profile.
ATTACHED to big tree.

Through Granddaughter Louisa T (Coronado) Pugliares (1893-1975) marriage to Thomas Clyde Woods (1894-) whose mother is Margaret Matilda (Armstrong) Woods (1872-1926) and is attached to the "Big Tree".

Got to do some merges now, though!  -NGP
Nice Nanette! Let me know if any of those merges need to be pushed through.

All set with descendants.

No progress with birthplace or parents.

Can someone check Loretto Coronado's obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper of 29 Oct 1887 please?  He was a significant land owner, so it may have more information than a standard obit. -NGP

Aww, he was found dead with a whiskey bottle next to him. I've added a clipping to his profile. I'll see if I can find more.

I misstated that! It's Henry who is supposed to have been born in 1915, not Joaquin. When I waded through the 1915 records, I was looking for Enrique or Henry, not Joaquin. So was Henry an anglicized version of Joaquin?

PS - Clearly, I need coffee...
The record for Joaquin is, in fact, from 1918, not 1915. I mistook the "quin__" in the record for a part of the year. So we  still need to find Henry...
I also think we should add Felipe as another child of Micaela. He probably died young. I can't find a death record for him, but the California Death Index lists at least two unnamed Murriettas in each year from 1924 to 1927, so he may well be one of those.

It's likely that Micaela had more children that we haven't found. I don't remember where I saw mention  of Felipe, but if we can document that he existed he deserves a profile.

I found three additional records for Rafael Celago, so I created a profile for him at José Rafael (Celaya Marse) Celago (1879-). He married Maria Muñez (or Muñoz) in 1906, but there's another record for him as the father of a legitimate child by a completely different woman born in 1909! I don't know what that's about...

You guys have done great work on these lines! Let us know if you find further children of Micaela.
Ellen,

there are tons of records for Rafael Celaya and his family, and I think you are right - the name never was Celago, just a reading/transcription error. I suspect the record entry about the other "legitimate" child with a different woman was either a clerical error, or a lie. Atil has only about 700 inhabitants now - I guess it is just vaguely possible that he had a cousin by the same name and we should double check, but it's probably him. We already know that he liked to play away.... He is in the 1930 census with another woman again; his wife had died in 1925.
Ellen,

I hate to say this, but we may have the wrong Rafael M Celaya as Joaquin's father. The one we have now was living in Atil during the 1930 census, 50 years old. There was a second one living in Altar during that census, just two doors down from Ramon Lopez. He was only 34, so would have been about 22 when Joaquin was born. I'll add this info to Joaquin's profile.
Gertrudis Garcia's family has been found! Stanley Baraboo found a marriage record for her parents and I found a border crossing record for the whole family that confirms the people he found are the right parents.
I know the challenge is over, but I'll continue to poke around in this and tie up some loose ends. A note for the original requester if they are following this page or someone can pass it on to them: given that their primary interest was finding out more about their grandfather Lopez' family and the progress we made on that is both limited and somewhat uncertain, I think the best way forward may now be DNA testing, particularly Y-DNA testing if enough male line descendants of the various men in question can be identified and persuaded to participate.
That's a good suggestion Maria.

Francisco Felix Rodriquez was born in Douglas, Arizona. Supposedly his father was one of Pancho Villa’s generals.

Adding his brother Cecil with source links to FamilySearch.

I was able to connect Francisco to the tree through his son in law, Oswald Landry. His mother was the daughter of Lusignan Blanchard, who was already in the tree. They should be 4 steps apart when the connection updates.

Awesome Erin! Thanks!! Bounty awarded.

Thanks for working on that Natalie!

Hi! I made a new connection via Maddux-869 to his existing father Maddux-440, connecting the Gonzalez like to the global tree! In an interesting fact, Benjamin Maddux's father Simeon was 56 years old when Benjamin was born!
Awesome Nina! That is interesting.

I’m definitely interested in participating. I’ve done a lot of research in Spanish-language Catholic parish registers from the Philippines, which I suppose had ones similar to those in the colonies in the Americas.
