I wanted to share this family photo of Berit Marta Rokne Olson with the community. Location: Bastion House, Midland SD. Date: ca 1910.
Berit and her younger sister Marian emigrated to the US from Norway in 1901 when Berit was 16. Their tickets were paid by a relative already here, but they did not have anyone else on the ship with them. Their parents and siblings came over the next year.
Berit worked in Yankton, SD, at Yankton College for a few years until she and Marian homesteaded near Midland, and Berit also worked at the Bastion Hotel while homesteading.
That hotel still stands, although it has been moved to a different location in town.
