I need help finding definitive information on the father of John Taylor Gilman. This is the John Taylor Gilman that I am fairly sure was born on July 12, 1800 not sure if he was born in NH or ME. Have found records indicating both. I know he died in Belfast, ME on January 22, 1865 from gangrene. (He was a sea captain who apparently dropped an anchor on his foot.) He is buried in Belfast along with his wife Pamelia Stevens who he married on December 16, 1825. They had 11 children. Alfonso Fairfield Gilman, who had a twin Alonzo, is my great-grandfather.

Thank you. It is certainly possible that this could be his father. He would have been 47 when the 2nd John Taylor was born. That is not completely out of the realm of possibility. Do you have any facts that link these two or is it a well educated hunch?

It just seems odd that there was no mention of this John T being his father because he was the governor of New Hampshire. Seems like a pretty big fact to ignore unless thre was a family dispute of some kind.
