G2G: Parentage of Samuel (1680-1766) and Griffith John (1683-1778)

A spurious noble parentage/ancestry for Quaker ministers Samuel and Griffith John was long ago debunked but persists (and is even still mentioned in the profile of Griffith). The current parentage found on the profiles is marked confident yet there is no documentation given and I have been unable to find any.

What we do know is that the brothers were Church of England until young men (according to the memorial testimony Philadelphia Annual Meeting minutes for Samuel). There is a claim the mother came with them to Pennsylvania (1709) but this appears undocumented.

Could our Wales and/or England colleagues have a look at this? Many thanks.

In Futhey & Cope History of Chester County, Pennsylvania, pg 207, may be read "...they were sons of John Philip, or Philips, and Ellen, his wife, taking their father's Christian name for their surname, as was the custom among the Welsh." The source of the information (published 1881) is uncertain.
