G2G: New Category Request: Wootton, Oxfordshire (not Berkshire)

I would like a new category for the profile of Charles Gomm and others noted below. The category is: Wooton, Oxfordshire

The Category Wooton, Berksire exists but is a different place and has only one valid profile: Tombs-182. On the Wooton Berkshire page it says: "Not to be confused with Wootton by Woodstock, Oxfordshire", however there is no "Wooton by Woodstock, Oxfordshire" Category which is where Wootton, Oxfordshire is.

Could I get help creating the new category to apply to: Gomm-165, Gomm-162, Gomm-164, Gomm-163? They got miscategorised as Wootton, Berkshire.

Wikitree help implies I can create a new category, but I have not found a way to do this. If this is possible for me, please explain how I could do it for myself. I am an experienced WikiTree-er. This is not the first category I have needed created. It would be much easier if I could do it. I understand the need nest it under the right

Thanks!

Martin

I've set up the category for "Wootton (near Woodstock), Oxfordshire" and added it to the profile.

Since 1974 when a large part of Berkshire was transferred into Oxfordshire, there have been two Woottons in Oxfordshire, so the disambiguation (in brackets since it is not part of the proper name) is necessary

It's a reasonable suggestion. Personally, I would much prefer it to be called "Wootton, Oxfordshire" rather than "Wooton" anything. There is one example where the Drayton near Banbury is labelled as such, so "Wootton (near Woodstock)" would be consistent with that, but it's arguably not necessary in this case.

Whether or not you create this category or let someone else do it, you can create categories (including personal categories) by adding the category anyway and ignoring the warning about the non-existent category. You then get a link you can edit. This is described here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Category_Creation_and_Removal

You would want to use an existing Oxfordshire category as a basis for the content. There are a few things to determine for the particular place: the wikidata id and the longitude and latitude, for example.

The instructions for setting up new categories in England are here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Categorisation_in_England

Thanks Paul, I will give it a try when I next need a new category. Martin
