How do I get unmarried partner to show up as parent in descendant list?

Descendant list makes it look like a different person was my grandmother. My mother was adopted and I know who both parents were. They are attached to her on her profile page. They were never married. He later married another woman and had a child. When I click on descendants list for someone higher up the tree in his family, it shows him and his wife, then underneath lists my mother and their child. This makes it appear as if both the children belong to him and his wife. Is there a way of making my grandmother show up in the descendant list as the mother? Or do I have to edit her profile to say she was married to grandfather and then explain in biography that she wasn't? Which just seems wrong and would cause confusion. Thanks.
