I think the key to this is the 1930 US Census. There is a Frederic A. Smith, 33 b. Ohio, is married but living at the Watertown Industrial YMCA Dormitory. He states that his father was born in Germany and his mother was born in England. He is a moulder of castings.("United States Census, 1930," Database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7ZP-Q8M : accessed 20 June 2015), Fredric A Smith, Watertown, Jefferson, New York, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 0065, sheet 2A, family , line 14, NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002), roll 1444; FHL microfilm 2,341,179..)
I would be looking for someone with a father from Germany, maybe with a name like Schmidt or Schmitt.
