After years of searching, relatives of Thomas Matthew Atkinson have been unable to find the date and place of his death. Family tradition has it that he went missing when he was going over Arthur's Pass from the West Coast to the East. Police have no record of him ever being reported missing and the last entry for him in NZ Papers Past was in 1907. He was born in Cumbria England and had worked for some time in Tasmania and Victoria, Australia. When he went missing he had two sisters and one daughter, Ruby Ethel Atkinson born in Melbourne 08.12.1887 living in NZ. Did he die accidentally or get murdered in NZ? Did he go back to Australia? Did he go back to Cumbria, England?
