I have a similar situation within the same time period, and a relatively similar geographical locale (VA/NC/SC/TN), with a granny

Long story short...  one way to go about this is to check the "Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs" ... It probably helps to research whether or not later descendants tried to make some kind of claim.

Hello! I cannot readily say the Dunlaps had intermarried with the Native American populations in the Carolinas, although I would not be surprised. There is at least one, maybe two gaps in the family line where the surnames of the women are lacking. I would also be very interested to know if there are any connections. I would love to learn more about your family stories that tend toward that end. Sincerely Yours, Lynden Rodriguez
