Is there a style guide for names in non-Roman script? E.g. Cyrillic.

For instance, I see my great-grandfather is listed this way: "Nikolay Aleksandrovich Krylov formerly Крыло́в" and my great-uncle is listed as: "Алексе́й Aleksey Никола́евич Nikolaevich Krylov formerly Крыло́в." I entered my great grand-mother as: "Александра Викторовна Ляпунова" (her birth name) but maybe I should have included Roman script? And a number of my ancestors used French versions of their names when Romanizing them, others used different spellings of their names over time, depending on where they lived. Before I fill out my grandfather's tree I wanted to know how to proceed.

Is there a way to indicate variant name spellings?

I'm not an expert for this dificult question … But I would mention some points from the view of a "normal" user smiley:

  • [[Крыло́в-2]] shows the possibility of cyrillic letters in the Last Name at Birth respectively the Wikitree ID. If the Last Name at Birth was in cyrillic letters, they should be used.
  • For the majority of users unable to read cyrillic there should be a transliteration. Maybe in the aka fields, surely in the biography.
  • The question for the method of transliteration is difficult. I think you will not get an unique answer …
  • If the person is well known in a special transliteration, this should be mentioned, even if it is against the normal used transliteration.
  • [[Крыло́в-1]] is in my eyes an awful example for filling the name fields: I think "Алексе́й Aleksey" was never the first name, neither the proper first name nor the preferred first name. The same with the middle name "Никола́евич Nikolaevich". This leeds to the awful name "Алексе́й Aleksey Никола́евич Nikolaevich (Крыло́в) Krylov". Then it would be better to have "Алексе́й Никола́евич Крыло́в" also known as "Aleksey Nikolaevich Krylov".
Just my 5 pence. blush
