Hello WikiTreers!

WikiTree Challenge #9 is now complete. We spent a fun and collaborative week working together to build up an impressive list of ancestors based on the seven starting people chosen by the Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research (SHHAR). We were challenged with finding ancestors from Mexico and the United States, with some very challenging brick walls scattered throughout the branches. Once again, our group of researchers did a fantastic job of tracking down family members and documenting them on WikiTree.

In what seemed like a short week, our challenge participants added or connected more than 3,966 relatives within seven degrees for the seven starting people! The highest amount of people were added to the lines for Cora Grumbels, who gained 1,253 relatives in one week! All but one of the seven lines were connected in unique ways to the global tree, with some being connected through multiple branches.

Altogether, more than 49 WikiTreers made 6,636 edits to connected profiles. Groups were quickly formed to tackle the more difficult lines, with emphasis on Spanish baptism records. We had people readily available for translations to obtain all details from those records.

Interesting Connections:

This year, 2023, is our "Year of Community Connections." So, we're looking for interesting connections between our starting people, and utilizing MyConnections, between starting people and others in their community. (Any time you are on a category page, you'll see a green MyConnections button in the corner. Click it to see how you are related to everyone in the category.)

Here are some of the connections we found this week:

  • Bonifacio Baca is four degrees from Cora Grumbels, Cora's brother's half- sister's uncle. In 1881, he was a witness for the prosecution in the trial of Billy The Kid for the 1878 shooting of Sheriff William Brady. A recently discovered photo alleged to be of Billy the Kid was said to have belonged to Bonifacio, and had been passed to the current owner's family through Bonifacio's son.
  • In March 1886 when Loretto Coronado was ascending the grade near his home, his horse drawn carriage went off the side of a cliff and on the way down to the gulch the cart rolled over Loretto a number of times before hitting bottom. He survived with unspecified internal injuries and bruised shoulders and face and was in considerable pain.
  • Well travelled Sinforosa Ruiz was born in Spain, her children Francisco (Frank) and Jose (Joe) were born in Spain, Emilia and Isabel were born in Cuba, and William in New Mexico. The family finally settled in Arizona. Sinforosa is 5 degrees from Ramon Lopez.
  • Roman Lozano Dominguez (1925-2012) served as a Private First Class in the United States Army during World War II. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war for four months. Roman is 6 degrees from Francisco Felix Rodriquez.
  • Governor José Antonio Romualdo Pacheco Jr. (1831-1899) is 7 degrees from Sebastian Constantino de Arce (1736-1795). On February 27, 1875 he became the State of California's twelfth governor, its first California-born governor, and its first governor of Mexican ancestry.

More Interesting Discoveries:

  • José Guadalupe Gallegos (1826 - 1867), 6 degrees from Cora Grumbels, was only 23 years old when he was elected and served as sheriff of San Miguel County, New Mexico from September 1851 through September 1853. The Sheriff's office was located in Las Vegas (New Mexico), a town known to harbor the most disreputable gang of gamblers, desperadoes, and outlaws of the Wild West. José Guadalupe was later elected, and served in four of the six Assemblies of the Territorial Legislature between 1855–1861.
  • Minnie Louella (Dalton) Harkey (1889-1989), sister of the wife of a brother of Cora (Grumbels) Gallegos died 3 months before her 100th birthday. Minnie is 3 degrees from Cora.
  • José Guadalupe Gallegos (1826 - 1867) was only 39 years old when he was reported as drowned following a mysterious carriage accident on May 18, 1867. José is 6 degrees from Cora Grumbels.
  • Maria Guadalupe (Sanchez Chavez) Walters' last child was born in 1887 when she was about 52 years old. Mary Walters was 3 years younger than her niece, who she was raised with after the death of her mother. Mary is 2 generations from Cora Grumbels, being her grandmother.
  • Frank Coronado was a premature baby born at home in 1902. The doctor came and said that he can't possibly live. "I'll come by in the morning but he can't possibly live." In the morning when the doctor arrived, he said, "I can't believe it. It's just like a miracle." Frank was healthy enough, but he just didn't grow. His little legs were shorter than they might have been otherwise, but he had good broad shoulders, a good build. Frank is 2 generations from Loretto Coronado, being his grandson.
