My uncle died a POW in Elmira New York Civil War prison of  smallpox. Is there a badge?

Most likely the 16th Georgia fought against the 106th New York  on that day during the Battle of Cold Harbor. My 3rd gg on maternal side was in the 106th was wounded during Battle of Monocacy

Sgt. Betts has many records on fold3 but needs subscription to view records I don’t believe he was married or had children

It was a horrid war so many lives it affected for generations

I have Fold3 but  haven't checked lately. Thanks.

Added categories and U.S. Civil War sticker can be improved upon. I would retag question with the correct civil war project g2g tag as US_CIVIL_WAR and Georgia also surname Betts etc

Hope this helps

Sorry, no badge, only my sympathy for cousin Ira. Per Wikipedia, Camp "Hellmira" as called by the POW"s, Elmira held 3 times the number of inmates as it did Union recruits, when used as a training facility. Up to 25% of its 12,000 prisoners died from a combination of malnutrition, continued exposure to harsh winter weather, disease from unsanitary conditions and lack of medical care. The last prisoner left September 27, 1865. The camp was destroyed the same year. A source suggests the camp was so embarrassing it was destroyed immediately.
