Per Wikipedia, Camp "Hellmira" as called by the POW"s, Elmira held 3 times the number of inmates as it did Union recruits, when used as a training facility. Up to 25% of its 12,000 prisoners died from a combination of malnutrition, continued exposure to harsh winter weather, disease from unsanitary conditions and lack of medical care. The last prisoner left September 27, 1865. The camp was destroyed the same year. A source suggests the camp was so embarrassing it was destroyed immediately.
