G2G: How to properly cite Find a Grave

I've watched the video. It's too confusing. Tried to follow answer given to someone else here. Just did what it said and got the response in red "Template:Find a Grave." When I clicked on that I got "limited to users in the group Template Editor.

Would someone please correct my citation for Aiguier 26 and then I will follow that to correct my other mistakes and if I cite FAG in the future. The memorial ID for James Kurley Aiguier is 199776035.

Someone is already editing the profile.

Hi Joan. I've done what you asked, using the way I cite Find a Grave: copy the source citation from the Find a Grave page; insert the template; and remove the URL link, which is now redundant. Some WikiTreers leave all or part of the link in place.

By the way, it would be good if you could please have a look at

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Find_A_Grave#Acronym_or_Abbreviation_for_Find_A_Grave

The official abbreviation is FG, and other ones may be seen as hurtful.

Thanks so much Jim. I can follow what you have done and fix my other entries. I don't know what you mean by "insert the template" but I guess it doesn't matter as I can enter the info without a template.

And also thanks for the correction on the abbreviation for Find A Grave. I had read about the official abbreviation and absolutely am against any homophobic references. It's just that I'm trying to edit minutes of an organization and respond to texts that I'm getting at the same time as I'm trying to resolve this one piece of my lack of knowledge of Wikitree. I am trying to add the research that I've done over five years to Wikitree person by person and it's a daunting task.

Thanks very much for your response, Joan! Good luck with the multitasking :-)

If you do want to "insert the template", it just means (in this example) replacing

Find a Grave Memorial ID 199776035

in the citation from the Find a Grave page by

{{FindAGrave|199776035}}

using the "pipe" character | in the middle.

To tell you how stupid the abbreviation was, I'm an ally and have a pride flag flying. . . .

Ok Jim. Would you do me one more favor and look at Aiguier 12? I hope I followed your example correctly. Also, any other suggestions about my citations would be helpful. Because this is my mother, I listed most of the sources I have for her. For other relatives I'm just choosing one of the many sources I have on my tree on Ancestry.

Thanks,

Joan

I had a look, here is my version. You can see I replaced the url with the template, because its a permanent link to that memorial even if the site shifts things.

*"Find a Grave", database and images, {{FindAGrave|126721718}}, (accessed 15 June 2023), memorial page for Marian Aiguier (7 Oct 1920-20 Mar 2014),  citing Calverton National Cemetery, Claverton, Suffolk County, New York, USA; created by Tom M. (contributor 48314184)

Thanks Lorraine, but I still have two questions. First, where do I find the template? I tried just typing in the format and had a problem with Aiguier 26.

Secondly, where did you fine a contributor # for Tom M. or is that your contributor number?

Joan, on the Find a Grave memorial page, if you scroll down you'll get to a place where it says something like

  • Maintained by: Bobby Kelley
  • Originally Created by: BKGeni

  • Find a Grave Memorial ID: 199776035
  • Source citation

If you click on that "Source citation" link, you will see the full Find a grave citation.  Copy that, and paste it into the biography text area of the profile.  After that you can add the template as Jim did earlier.

Find a Grave, database and images (accessed 16 June 2023), memorial page for James K Aiguiier (1850–21 Dec 1892) Find A Grave: Memorial #199776035, citing Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York, USA; maintained by Bobby Kelley (contributor 46959922).

The "Tom M. (contributor 48314184)" is that Find a Grave member's username and number.

Thanks Lorraine and Melanie for the answers for Joan while I was sleeping :-)

The template is something we type up ourselves. The information on Find A Grave is here, it includes how to format the template ( a Wikitree approved link)

Thanks Melanie! I was boiling up some spuds and had not checked back. You are a gem!laugh

Melanie, many thanks. I think you gave me the missing piece. I had never clicked on the "source citation" link at the bottom of the page. I will see what I can do with the two examples I referenced in this thread and then try to fix the couple of other ones that I have that need to be fixed.

I think I have fixed all of my Find A Grave references. Your explanation helped the most. Now I need to try to find where the app extension is that people were referencing. I'm pretty sure the rest of my sources could be formatted better.

There is a page in the WikiTree help section about Find A Grave sourcing that is helpful. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Find_A_Grave

Thanks Patrick! That's a good page to keep bookmarked for reference. I have it on speed dial on my computer!

You can also use the Wikitree Sourcer browser extension. It will create citations for a number of sites including Find a Grave. The citations for Find a Grave will include the template.

More info on this can be found on the App page under the Find drop down menu.

The extension is easy to add to your browser and easy to use.

This is what I recommend also. It is so quick and easy to get a source citation. I do like to make a small modification to the Find A Grave citation from WikiTree Sourcer. This is the output from the app:

* ''Memorial'': "Find a Grave", database, ({{FindAGrave|199776035}} : accessed 15 June 2023), Memorial page for James K Aiguiier (1850-21 Dec 1892), citing Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York, USA; Maintained by Bobby Kelley (contributor 46959922).

I like to remove the "Memorial": and then the quotation marks around "Find A Grave" and replace them with the single apostrophes that form an italic instead. So then I get:

* Find a Grave, database, ({{FindAGrave|199776035}} : accessed 15 June 2023), Memorial page for James K Aiguiier (1850-21 Dec 1892), citing Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York, USA; Maintained by Bobby Kelley (contributor 46959922).
