Rev (Lavalin) Francis Nugent (1569 - 1635) has Parents Edward Nugent & Margaret O'Connor Faly referenced by Aoife Duignan, in Dictionary of Irish Biography revised 2009
However Lodge & Archdall state that his father was Sir Thomas Nugent of Moyrath, and that his mother was the Lady Mary, daughter to Lord Delvin. (Probably Richard [Nugent], 2nd Earl of Westmeath - see Cracroft)
Historical sketch of the Nugent family (1853) pg 15 Gives his parentage as Christopher of Moyrath who m. Elizabeth Luttrell in 1601 but as Rev Francis was born 1569 this is obviously incorrect and should be moved back a generation as son of Thomas and Lady Mary.
What is strange here is that Duignan gives as sources both Cogan - The diocese of Meath: ancient and modern (3 vols, 1862–70), pg 648 and Catholic encyclopedia (1913) both of which state that his parents are Sir Thomas Nugent & Lady Mary.
Is this just a case of lazy scholarship or has some new evidence come to light in the past century?
