Hi Wikitreers,

I have in my vintage post card antique collection two post cards both addressed to a Mr. L.M. Levering 1777 Church Street, Washington, D.C.

however the last name is clearer on this post card, but is it a match to Leonard Matthews Levering (1886 - 1966)?

any collaboration in the mystery of the name on this post card is appreciated

Needs transcribing of note on postcard please as I tried my best to transcribe it as seen in bio

Note: Postage paid with a 2 cent Jefferson stamp

Thank you

This is a fun game, haha feeling a bit like a real detective....a"Miss Marple" maybe!

This is his wife Mathilde (Mueden) Leisenring, an American Painter. A Notable!

Wow I got some work to do to get these post cards on the right page. I’ll be updating later today but does Luther Morris Leisenring have a wiki?

Got lots to do I see oh boy!

Wow you guys are amazing frownlaugh

No wiki page for Luther, tho he is mentioned in his wife's wikipedia page.

I did a google search on Luther and some interesting things come up.

A respected Architect -A bio of him in this article - worked on some prominent buildings - https://clintonwhitehouse3.archives.gov/onap/736history.html

Make sure you browse the tabs at the top of the page on this one!

Seems he was also an Artist

And An Author  - This reference is in the footnotes of the article.

Luther Morris Leisenring. “Our Village,” p. 4, quoted in “History Trails” published by Baltimore County Historical Society, Vol. 16, Issue 1, Autumn 1981, p. 3.

And his wife seems to have painted his portrait (no image attached but the details are there)

The 1950 census release is a big help in genealogy this might of been very hard to find prior to. What a great source! yes

Hi Andrew, here is what I think it says, though the last name of the receiver of the card is very different!?

This is a beautiful drive and scenery all the way like this Coming from Glastonbury to E. Hampton.

Hope every thing is fine at the house + will be back soon.

Regards, Mrs. Kingsley

Postcard date stamped Sept 29, 1955 in E. Hampton Conn.

I was able to create the new profiles for the proper match to post card and updated appropriately. Still needs more work in the new profiles as she is a notable

Lorraine, I would agree with that transcription.  And it IS a beautiful drive from Glastonbury, going through Portland to East Hampton.

Andrew:

I think that it went to "Luther Morris Leisenring."

A city directory for Washington, D.C. from 1923 lists L. Morris Leisenring as living at 1777 Church Street.  Boyd's Directory of the District of Columbia.  https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015074642573&view=1up&seq=4&size=125&q1=Levering

He is also listed at that address in his World War I draft card. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-8BLH-YW5?i=1265&cc=1968530&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AKZF7-DFN

Whoops, yes your right Roger. Luther Morris Leisenring - not Leonard Matthew Levering that Andrew was trying to match the postcard to.

Lorraine:

You get credit for great eyes.   I had to backtrack through a directory.  I am amazed that you could make out the card.

                       Roger

Interesting couple, Luther was an architect and photographer and his wife Mathilde was a respected Painter.

Thanks, we are a good team! I credit my years as a court clerk for the "keen eye"!

Thanks Roger yes

Still a work in progress but these resource help a bunch!

I wonder who Mrs. Kingsley was? A friend or maybe a daughter a sister even?

I have been wondering that too! Could be a housekeeper. She says on the postcard " hope things are fine back at the house" like she lives there?? But if a sister or daughter unlikely to sign "Mrs Kingsley" so don't think its that close of a connection ( I looked but could not find a close relative with that married name). In the 1950 Census he has a live in housekeeper, but it is not a Kingsley. She may have left his employ and he hired Mrs. Kingsley or the one in 1950 married? Post card was dated 1955.

Interesting possibility she sent two post cards one on September 29, 1955 and the other August 4, 1958. She definitely enjoyed the season of Autumn in New England in the Conn area
