LNAB for D'Oyley

I'm currently reviewing a Magna Carta Trail, one of whose members is Thomas Lewknor.  Presently he is shown married both to Joan D_Oyley and to Joan D'Oyly.  I'm confident that once discrepancies between the two Joans are ironed out, they will show as the same person.  But before any merges are contemplated, it would be helpful to first resolve the proper surname or LNAB.

Richardson uses d'Oyley (Royal Ancestry, III, 570).  The Euroaristo page on naming does not cover the d' prefix, however, it really is the form of "de" that is used in front of a vowel, so following that logic, the LNAB would be Oyley.

I notice that one of the family seats is Stoke Doyle, so I suspect Doyle is an anglicization of the name.

Advice now would be most useful once the profiles are ready to be merged.

Hi Jack

Although the interpretation of the EuroAristo naming standards would favour Oyly or Oyley, I think this is one of the exceptions because unlike most English medieval names where they eventually dropped the 'de' or 'd' part of the name, D'Oyly (with a capital D) was used into more modern times.

I don't have access to any of the Richardson books, so can't say whether it should be D'Oyly or D'Oyley, but would definitely recommend that the D' is retained.

Thank you John for helping with this LNAB. I agree with your conclusion, and would prefer Richardson's spelling of D'Oyley, so perhaps we need to create a new profile to merge them into, since neither quite meets Richardson's spelling.

i think the usual practice is to change the LNAB of one of the existing profiles (effectively then creating a new profile) to what it should be, and then the merge the other one into it.  Given neither of them is correct, then it perhaps doesn't matter too much which one is changed.
Yes, I think this will be the path we take.  Please don't anyone act precipitously, however, as this line has a number of interconnected messes and I'm not yet convinced that anything is as it seems!  The Joans D'Oyley may still prove to be two separate people.  And there may be more than one distinct Lewknor family involved!  I'm about to do a separate post about that!
