Several Questions

I have been cleaning up a GEDCOM file in hopes of uploading it here.  I have it down to about 500 people and am pretty sure everyone has someone they are attached to by marriage or blood.  Once I have it as good as I can get it, I just go to upload it, right?  I doubt many of my people will be on here as I was unable to find any of them a few months ago when I was looking for info.

I have applied to be part of the German Ancestry project.  Now, I just wait for someone to contact me?

I see that there are areas for stories, should these go with the family files or is there an area for family stories?  Also, all of my German Ancestors were from the area around Stuttgart and Württemberg, Germany.  I also do not see the surname Herrmann or Hermann listed in the lists of family names.  How do we add it?

Okay, that's it for now.

Hello Cathy,

Once you upload your gedcom there are several steps. it goes through the review process, then you are notified to review it and if there are possile matches to compare and whether reject mark as as match or skip, Then that is reviewed and once  it is approved for import the Hermann name will populate.

The stories you see are written after import when the profile is cleaned up some can write awesome bios and some not so awesome but the point is sharing what we know of that person

Welcome to the family there is always a cousin around to assist.

As I looked at these answers I finally decided to just enter the people by hand.  As I thought about the process, I had two avenues to pursue:  1.  Upload a GEDCOM and then go back and clean up the files after it was reviewed and approved.  2.  Enter each person by hand and add my commentary, references as I go.  I decided on the latter.  As I was creating the people and relationships, I actually did find a few people already on here.  Not surprising as I have seen some familiar names on profiles.  These Harmon's of Southeastern Kentucky are closely related to Goins, Meadors and other families of the region.  It is interesting to do them by hand and see the pieces of the puzzle coming together.

Thank you all for your thoughts.

Hi, Cathy. Welcome!

It sounds like you are doing a good job with your GEDCOM. The piece of advice I would give you is to make a mini-GEDCOM out of one branch of your tree, maybe 10-20 profiles, and start by importing that.

Then you can see what your profiles will look like when they are translated to WikiTree. You can make adjustments until you have a system that results in profiles that require minimal editing after import.

Good luck! Carole

Carole:

Thank youo for your input.  As I stated above, I decided to do it all by hand.  It now appears that there is just as much work either way,  i.e. upload a GEDCOM, wait for it to be reviewed and then add comments, etc.  Or just do them one by one doing most everything for each profile as I go.  I decided on the latter as it seems to offer me more control.  I think that need for precision and control is a German kind of thing.  Now that I know about these ancestors, a lot of my personal characteristics make a lot more sense.
