July Sourcerer's Challenge!

Question

One thing that will always make WikiTree a better place to work on our shared family history is good sources. Unfortunately, many profiles still lack these. A good number are from old gedcom uploads before the Forest Elf started watching out for sourcing on uploads and many others are from additions from folks who just didn't know better or were going to add sources later and have forgotten. We have a place to deposit these profiles that need help: Category:Unsourced_Profiles. There, many profiles are even broken down geographically to help you find where you can help. Many Leaders have brought up a Sourcerer's Project idea, but we thought a challenge would be fun (thank you Leaders for the ideas!).

Here's the fun part-

We want to give our members some incentive, even more than the fact that we're making our tree that much better and reliable, and we'd like to encourage you all to add good sources to profiles. Good can be debatable, it's true, but at this point we're thinking anything other than referencing just another tree is good, so census data, BMD records/index references, family bible references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. all help us with having a better sourced tree.

We're creating a challenge with two travelling badges to let you show off your sourcing prowess a bit.

Each month we'll post in G2G to start up the month's challenge. You come and post the profile you've added source(s) to (at least the profile number/name, if not a link to it) as well as what sources you added and at the end of the month, we'll tally for a winner. You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles. I will post an example after this so you can see what I mean.

* All profiles improved *MUST* come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you can't create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

Still searching for more and 'real' sources of course, working on the Dutch Roots Project of course this is what we do almost all the time for many of these gedcom uploaded lineages . Sorting out , improving and try source Pre-1700 and younger profiles.  That's what the project was meant for in the first place , and really love it  

Guess many of our members deserve sourcerer badges and are great ''sourcerers'' , but a challenge is a great approach and  very motivating so a great way to a large amount of profiles sourced ! So my compliments for this great idea  !!

good i will keep an eye on files needing sources. I am guilty also for sources the vast amount of people i have entered are from family records so I still have to go step by step back over my entries and enter sources also so will be doing those over the next couple weeks.

 Also if anyone needs Vermont records i have a Vermont.gov access account to  view all Vermont archive information on file via Ancestory.com for free . Be aware not all files are on record in archives due in part that some towns did not send all records up. and very old records are sketchy at best due to of conflicts of new york and New Hampshire land grant disputes as a result some records were destroy on purpose by conflicting settlers. Prior to that parts of of current  Vermont and New York state were parts of Canada with records being recorded by priest.

1. Hanna Hale Remington added: Birth, marriage and death from Suffield Town Records. Marriage from Torrey, "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" (I am not sure if this counts.)

2. Thomas Remington added: Birth, marriage and death from NEHGR, vol. 147, page 376.

3. Jonathan Hale I can find no evidence that there was a son to Thomas Hale of Newbury named Jonathan. I have done a Google search, a search with ancestry.com and looked in Hale, Robert S., "Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Hale ...", 1889, link and found only four siblings: Thomas, John, Apphia, and Samuel. This is reflected in Find a Grave. I changed his category from Unsourced to Questionable.

4. Unknown Hale Same as above.

5. Mary Richards does have sources, but Mary Richards does not. I proposed a merger (they were Unmerged Matches) because they definitely seem to be the same person, but they are now back to Unmerged Matches and truthfully I have not been able to find any supporting data other than that already cited.

6. Abigail Cole added birth and marriage sources. There is a proposed merge with this Abigail and Abigail Cole Foss that needs to be completed.

7. Thomas Remington-525 merged into Thomas Remington.

If you copy the link from the profile you're working on, then you can attach it to text here by hitting that little world with the loops on them in the answer toolbar. If you type the text you want to display first, then highlight it and push that world button, it will pop up a little prompt to have you paste the url which will attach it to the text you typed.

It is perplexing as to why some profiles are considered to be 'unsourced', for example http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hobbs-174#_note-Memorials - which clearly cites some good sources.  My inclination in such cases would be to remove the 'unsourced profile' label.

Would this be appropriate in such cases?

Hi Christian - the hyperlinks in the G2G forum work differently from the wiki profiles.  Highlight the name then use the "link" button in the tool bar (looks like a globe with a chain link on it, top right) and use the complete URL for the profile

For example:  Graham-7235 would be:
