Profile listing of legally changed first name

+6 votes
Hi all,

I’m new to wikitree and new to genealogy.  I’d like some advice for my own profile page to deal with my own first name change.

I was born in 1962 Valerie Kay Buchanan

I was married in 1978 and my name became Valerie Kay Winters

In 2010 I legally changed my name from Valerie Kay Winters to Letha Louise Anderson.  (After my son left home I no longer wanted to carry my ex-husband’s last name and I adopted my maternal grandmother’s married name which was Leatha Anderson)

In my profile I listed Valerie as my proper name and Letha as my preferred name.  Kay as my middle name.  Buchanan as my Last Name at Birth.  Anderson as my current last name and Winters as “Other Last Names”.  I gave an explanation of the name change under Sources and I uploaded an image of the court order document for my legal name change.

Now at the top of my public profile page it says

Letha (Buchanan) Anderson

Just below that is lists my name as

Letha K. Anderson formerly Buchanan

On my father’s page it lists my name as

Valerie K. (Buchanan) Anderson

And then if I click on my name link from my father’s page it takes me to a page where my name is listed as

Valerie Kay Anderson formerly Buchanan aka Winters

So, I guess I’m asking if I’ve handled this name change on my profile page in the best way possible.  Thanks.

Wow!  Thanks for asking this question, I have a similar issue with a cousin.

She was born a cousin (niece of my father) with her father's surname.

At age  5 was adopted by my paternal grandparents (then got their surname as birthname, which actually gave her the same birthname as her mother).

She married, got a new surname, and had 2 children who have that LNAB.

Now she does not like married name and changed to an entirely new middle name and last name.

So far her profile has only her adoptive LNAB because I do not want to start anything to 'discuss' with her.

I have all the documentation of actual birth, changed birth cert and 'generation jump', so I can add it all later.

I don't claim to be an expert, but it sounds like what you put in the various name fields follows the guidelines. It's what I would expect to see if I was searching for you...
