seeking to prove my cherokee heritage

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I believe I may be related to Ransom M. Musick. He married a Cherokee Indian Kesiah. Her father was a Cherokee chief. His name is Kesiah as well. My great grandmother is Martha Elizabeth Dickey Pierce. My family is listed in Mae Gean Petit's book under Martha Elizabeth "Coon" Dickey. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -Pam Kelly

Identify a direct maternal line descendant of Kesiah and have him or her take the mtDNAPlus test from Family Tree DNA.   The tester's mother's mother's mother's etc. mother would need to be Kesiah.  If the mtDNA results come back as haplogroup A, B, C, D, or some types of X then it is likely Native American.  Hopefully it is you who fits the criteria as the direct maternal line descendant. Otherwise, you can then use autosomal and X-DNA testing of descendants of Kesiah to try to confirm the parent / child relationships from you back to Kesiah.

Sincerely, Peter

The only definitive answer for Cherokee's is the "Dawes Roll" you will find all Cherokees listed some may not have registered if they were off reservation in that case look for blood relatives....CAUTION the feather/bird clan may be adopted from other tribes and or adopted by the tribe and have no native genetics...this would include slaves that were adopted, they have full tribal rights but you would have to prove with documentation
