source citation for a WikiTree profile?

I recently referred someone to a profile I'd worked on, and he asked if he could add the information to his database (it's run by a non-profit & free for anyone to search). I told him sure, but to please cite WikiTree & the profile ID.

I was looking around to see if there was a recommended citation format in such a case & didn't find one. Is there one?

I would think the Wikitree should only be seen as a repository and has no more business being referred to in a citation than Ancestry or any other repository.  Otherwise it just continues a possible loop of misinformation.

Of course there could be the case where a biography on the Wikitree has a "nowhere else on earth" piece of work and I guess that would be different.

(I hope one day the Wikitree is where everyone will know where to come to to look for the truth.)

Maybe one could use the URL for the profile like:

Wikitree is prominently in the URL
My feelings too! He did post the URL for the profile page along with some of my comments to him when I said sure - that the bio was collaborative and relied heavily on research of x & y (although not the one about the bio not being static). He did a copy/paste, so the links in the bio didn't transfer. I think anyone reading it will come to the profile page to see if wording that's obviously for a link has one (e.g., "see especially this post.")  Cheers, Liz

I agree, Wiki will become the place to come for the truth!

Depends what citation style he is using, but I would go with something along the lnes of:

Wikitree contibutors, "Name of person or free space page", WikiTree,, Inc., link to page (access date).
