HELP PLEASE? I have been through profile/last name searchs also birth, death, marrage lists, i have asked other McLean profile managers if they can make a connection to my tree on any private profiles that seam to match and im still stuck on my grandparents! I have looked via face book and using my Dads siblings to find a match and I'm getting nowhere..... its very dis-heartening. I cant find Andrew and Agnes McLean. AGNES (Rodgers) MCLEAN born 6th Augest 1911 - died 7th Augest 1998 wife of ANDREW MCLEAN died 22nd September 1968 aged 61 from SCOTLAND. PARENTS OF: William (Bill) born 1931, I think he is still alive, Robert who died 19/3/97, Jean who died at age 43, Ian born 6/7/1946 (still alive and my father) and Andrew died in Saudi Arabia. I know i'm missing a lot of info but what can I do with what I have here?

Do you have any location on birth of Agnes?

I have an Agnes married to a George McLean

Name: Elizabeth Agnes McLean
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 6 Jan 1909
Birth Place: Milton, Massachusetts, USA
Father: George McLean
Mother: Agnes Rodgers

When I put Agnes Roges born 1911 in I see a few of them.

You say they were from Scotland but what country did they live in? What country did their children live in? What country were the children born?
I know they both died in Scotland and im sure they were born their as well but i cant confirm that. They lived in Edinbrough, Andrew was a minor. My uncles lived in Glasgow and my Dad lived in Stirling (were i was born) untill 1987 when we moved to New Zealand.

If you are going to be doing research in Scotland. Which appears to be the case from the information you have supplied can I suggest you have a look at this blog.

There are lots of useful links here.

Review what you know about your grandparent; you seem to have some knowledge of there birth & death dates. A marriage date and record entry detail would be particularly useful. Purchasing that certificate should reveal the father of both, particularly if that is a UK record. UK Births around 1911, are difficult as 1911 is the last published census record, and BMD births entries did not note the maiden name of the mother before 1912

On trees they seem to have his parents but I do not have a membership. Perhaps you can get a trial membership?

You can buy all Scottish Certificates at

You can register on the site for free, and do searches where you can keep narrowing the search period down to determine the year you want.  To see the results of the search you need to pay (1 credit per page with a maximum of 25 entries per page), then when you have found the correct entry, it will costs 5 credits to view/download the entry.

There were NO marriage entries for "Andrew McLEAN" to "Agnes RODGERS" but there was an entry in 1932 for "Andrew McLEAN" to "Agnes ROGERS";I then narrowed it down further to (under County/City/Minor Records) Edinburgh City in the district of East Calder.

Scottish marriage certificates will give their names, age, address, occupation, both parents names & mother's maiden surname.

A search of all "Agnes ROGERS" born in 1911 only found 2 entries. You would need to obtain the marriage certificate first to locate the correct parents' names, however the births index does not record the parents' names, so you would need to view the entries to find the correct one.

A search of all "Andrew McLEAN" born in 1906 & 1907 produced 19 results.

The fees are very reasonable - 30 credits for £7 - which if you are very lucky will let you view 5 pages of search results & download 5 certificates !
