Once I upload my GEDCOM.. will it automatically fill in my family tree? Or am I going to have to completely redo over 8 generations of relatives to the tune of about 800+ ancestors?

If I am going to have to redo all the work I have done for the past 8 years.. I may as well opt out now.

Thank you

Hello DJ, Welcome to WikiTree

Here is a link to information about GEDCOM

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/GEDCOM

I trust you will find the information you need and that you will add your family WikiTree. We love to have more cousins!

Always come back to G2G and ask questions.

Hi DJ!  Thank you so much for joining our one big worldwide family WikiTree.

I hope it doesn't dissuade you, but generally, you have to edit each and every one of your profiles whether you add them by gedcom or individually.  They all need to be cleaned up, links checked to other family members, sources checked and similar edits that just don't happen straight upon creation of a profile.  For this reason, it may be easier in the long run to manually enter your 800 ancestors.  My guess is that you will connect your branches to the WikiTree trunk before the 8th generation.

Thank you for the gift of your time, information and sources on the WikiTree to the WikiTree Community.  We appreciate your efforts very much!  Kitty

I have had this experience. My answer...How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Here is why you want to do the work. You will recieve so much more feedback from WikiTree than you ever have from any pay site. My advice...don't download a huge GEDCOM, instead start with your imediate family...wait for feedback...add a few more profiles...wait for feedback. Use this as a supplemetary source of information for your tree with a view of eventually moving your complete tree over...in time...a long time.

WikiTree is a valuable resource and you have the benefit of casual genealogists unwilling to pay to look at a pay site... viewing you research.

All the best..don't give up I promise you will be glad you prevailed.

Thanks much for taking time to answer. My immediate family is small and I have spent the last 10 years building my tree. Some on my mom's side as far back as the 1500's. But I have a gut feeling those in the first 4 generations are going to have very few profile matches. and that is where the bulk of my input will be to add cousins, full family details and such. I will take you advice and go from there. Thanks again.... one bite at a time =)
