Thanks so much for trying to help. Mary may be Frances Eugenia's mother, but there are two reasons that's still not settled. First, in the 1870 census, all of the children born after Mary and John's marriage are listed first, John's mother is listed below them, and then Frances is listed last. Several times in other families, where documentation exists proving two marriages and two sets of children, I've seen the children of the second marriage listed first and the children of the first marriage listed beneath them. Second, I have also seen - just a week ago in fact - a case where the first wife deserted and her children, proven to be hers by original Ohio birth registers, grew up regarding their stepmother as their mother to the degree that their own survivors named the stepmother as mother for the death certificates. A similar mindset may account for the numbers of children for John and Mary in the 1900 census.
